GIANTS OF MANDURAH // finally a chance to check out these beautiful wooden sculptures by @thomasdambo that integrates into nature so well. Super cool that these get to stay in @westernaustralia until November 2023. 😍 Pick up the guide with QR codes from the Mandurah visitor’s centre @visitmandurah and find the last giant (second pic) when you’ve found all the symbols from the other giants. Fun activity and a nice adventure - bring good walking shoes! 😉 Tip: when you get to the last giant and where there’s an intersection between left and right, pick the right side! We went on the left at first and ended up walking a path that had so many spider webs. 🕸️🕷️😵‍💫 Seba’s Song (giant on third photo) is quite dangerous - so selfie hunters beware. There’s no selfie worth risking your life over. Stay well and alive to enjoy more things in the world. 🫶😉 Thank you to the artist, @formwa and everything involved in bringing this project together. Sad for the giant that was burnt down - that act of an individual was despicable and is truly not a reflection of what Perth stands for. Trolle jagen in Dänemark

Dänemark ist voller toller Trolle! Der Schöpfer dieser oft riesigen Skulpturen ist Thomas Dambo. Thomas Dambo ist ein Künstler der in oder eher bei Dänemarks Hauptstadt Kopenhagen lebt. Thomas hat sich bei seiner Kunst vor allem der Nutzung von recycelten Materialien verschrieben. Und so macht er daraus schöne und lustige Skulpturen und Installationen. Seine Idee dahinter ist, die Menschen dazu zu inspirieren, Spaß zu haben und Müll nicht als wertlos, sondern als nutzbare Ressource zu betrachten. "Den Kæmpestore Troldefolkefest" (Das Große-Trolle-Volksfest)Eines seiner großen Projekte sind die großen Trolle aus Holz, die er nicht nur überall in Dänemark sondern weltweit aufbaut. Im Juli habe ich während des Urlaubs in Aarhus vier dieser Trolle, die in der Nähe der zweitgrößten dänischen Stadt zu finden sind, besucht. In einem Umkreis von circa 100 Kilometern um Aarhus kannst Du die Trolle an einem Tag besuchen und bewundern. Auch auf Youtube, Facebook und Instagram ist er zu finden.Wie man sieht, stehen Thomas Dambos Trolle nicht nur in Europa sondern auch den USA.Was ich an seiner Arbeit toll finde ist, dass sie nicht in Museen “eingesperrt“ ist, sondern sozusagen öffentlichen Raum einnimmt und in diesem stattfindet. Die Trolle können nicht nur frei und ohne Eintritt oder Öffnungszeiten besichtigt werden. Sie können auch “bespielt“ werden, indem beispielsweise Kinder darauf herum klettern. Sie sind nicht eingezäunt, kein Schild sagt “Berühren verboten“. Trolle, wohin man schaut. Auf der Trollmap sind nicht nur die dänischen sondern alle weltweiten Standorte zu finden.Natürlich hat diese Öffentlichkeit und Umwelt auf Einfluss auf die Trolle. Einer, den wir besichtigt haben, muss beispielsweise renoviert werden und war daher mit rotweißem Flatterband abgesperrt und mit Hinweisschildern versehen, die auf die Reparaturen hinweisen und deshalb darum bitten, vorerst nicht auf dem Troll herum zu klettern. Trolle aus rohen Brettern und BalkenDie Holzskulpturen sind aus rohen Brettern und Balken gebaut, die nicht aufwändig mit Schutzfarbe oder ähnlichem konserviert werden, das heißt, die Trolle “altern“ auch in und mit ihrer Umgebung.Klickt man einen Standort an, erfährt man die Details über die Trolle und sieht entsprechende Fotos.Trolle “stehen nicht prominent“Was mir außerdem gut gefällt ist, das Thomas Dambo seine riesigen Holz-Trolle nicht an “prominenten“ Plätzen aufstellt. Also in großen bekannten Stadtparks oder so. Nein. Im Gegenteil, er versteckt sie bewußt an unspektakulären Orten, damit die Menschen sie suchen und “jagen“ können, um sie zu bestaunen. „Sigurd“ beispielsweise rast auf seinem Kleinwagen wie auf einem Bobbycar eine Hang bei dem winzigen Dorf Mørke eine steile Wiese hinunter. Mørke ist quasi ein Dörfchen, denn es hat nicht einmal 2000 Einwohner. Es ist kein Touristenziel und hat außer einer Kirche aus dem Mittelalter ehrlich gesagt nicht viel zu bieten. Aber in Mørke findest Du gleich zwei von Thomas Dambos Trollen, denn neben „Sigurd“ ist dort auch noch „Ben Chiller“ zu finden.„Ben Chiller“Ein anderer Troll - eigentlich gleich zwei in einer Skulptur - namens “Simon und Anine“ sind an einer banalen Einfallstraße nach Aarhus zu finden. Sie sitzen auf einer Wiese am Straßenrand, hinten dran große Märkte und Fastfood-Läden. Also auch diese Skulptur ist an einem “ordinären“ und alltäglichen Ort zu finden. Damit, so finde ich, erfahren die auf den ersten Blick unspektakulären Standorte eine besondere Wertschätzung durch Dambo, weil er seine Kunst eben in den Alltag und in solche Regionen und Gegenden bringt. Mit “Anna of Green“ steht sogar eine der Trollfiguren in Deutschland und zwar im Süden von Hamburg. Anna of Green steht im Süden von HamburgHappy City BirdNatürlich baut Thomas Dambo nicht nur Trolle, er hat weitere laufende Kunstprojekte. Eines nennt sich “Happy City Bird“ und läuft bereits seit 2006. Seit diesem Jahr hat Thomas Dambo mehr als 3500 Vogelhäuser in verschiedenen Formen und Farben auf der ganzen Welt gebaut und installiert. Einige stellten er und seine Mitarbeiterselbst her, während andere in verschiedenen Workshops von anderen Menschen mitgestaltet wurden. Die Vogelhäuser werden mal in der Gegen drapiert, mal zu komplexen Skulpturen zusammen gestellt und bevölkern Städte, um Vögeln als Behausung zu dienen. Kunst und Naturschutz im Einklang. Eine tolle Idee.Happy WallEin weiteres Projekt nennt sich “Happy Wall“. Dabei werden mit Scharnieren bunte Klapptafeln auf einer großen Wand angeordnet. Photos by @MichaelGeorge / I was only two years old when my family moved onto Argyle Drive. We lived in one of the first houses in the neighborhood and called the rest of the land "the woods." I spent most of my childhood in the woods. As lots were bought and houses were built, the woods got smaller and smaller, until all that remained was a single plot next-door. We built a tree house, played with snakes, and had a small area where we set random objects on fire. We built traps: 10-foot holes with palm leaves over the top. I fell in one once and had to get pulled out by the adults, my sides covered in deep scratches from the aptly named saw palmetto. The woods were a mythical and private place. After punching a bully neighbor in the face, I hid from his dad in a tree and cried out of fear. My courage only went so far. As I got older, I began to fear the woods. I once stayed up late reading about the legendary chupacabra and then thought I saw one slipping into the trees at night. My relationship with forests has continued to change in my adulthood. Wooded areas are places to hike, wonder, run, think through problems, find a new bug. I often reference fantasy in characteristic groves: “This looks like the dark woods from 'Beauty and the Beast' … Are we in the Shire?” A few weeks ago my boyfriend and I visited the Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens to witness a unique kind of forest fantasy. The artist Thomas Dambo has created giant trolls within the landscape. They have a presence, like they erupted out of the ground they’re standing on. I noticed visitors kept their distance, as if to approach them too closely would somehow disturb them. Guardians of the Seeds is a unique exhibit. It sent me back into childhood memories and reminded me of the solace I find in the forest today. FOREST GIANTS. // One of the many must-dos in and around Louisville is a walk through the huge @bernheimforest not too far out of town. Scattered throughout are massive wooden forest giants by artist @thomasdambo. While it can get crowded, it’s worth it on any non-rainy day as it’s quite peaceful despite the other visitors like you and me.
