Thursday, December 12th. 

It was almost midnight, and Lucy was in her pajamas sitting on the floor in front of the altar. She would have been kneeling on the rail, but her belly stuck out too far for that now. Her maternity leave had begun on her due date... which was five days ago, and she couldn’t sleep between worrying if everything was okay at the hospital and the little one’s kicks. The church had always been a safe place for her, and since it was open for prayer 24/7 she had found herself there more and more often on sleepless nights. Tonight she wasn’t facing the crucifix behind the altar, but the statue of Mary off to the side of the platform, and wondering how many rosaries she would have to say before her labor would finally start.
