thomas mailaender’s “illustrated people”
Illustrated People – Thomas Mailaender.
Illustrated People is the manifestation in book form of a performance by Thomas Mailaender, in which he applied original negatives selected from the Archive of Modern Conflict’s collection to the skin of models and projected a powerful UV lamp over them, revealing a fleeting image on the skin’s surface. Mailaender then photographed each of his models before exposure to daylight caused the images to disappear.
Designed as an artist book by Thomas Mailaender @thomasmailaender ‘The Fun Archaeology’ presents a collection envisioned by this French artist. Over more than a decade he has gathered thousands of original documents, found at flea markets, charity sales, car boot sales, or on websites. It is a wide range of materials, from war letters to pornography, family photo albums to political leaflets, and anonymous work to artists’ proofs. By arranging this body of images in sequence, Mailaender creates a very personal and impressive visual archaeology of the 20th century. More than 100 items were selected for this publication, in which they are all captioned and recontextualised.
