Seeing these pets, now bred in all possible shapes and forms, it is hard to believe that they descend from wild animals. In the photos they pose patiently for the camera of their owner, looking their best, tails wagging. To bring the dogs back to life, Ruth van Beek cuts and fold the images. Through this process of animation and fixation many things go awry. Recruit, by Tomoko Sawada, published by @rvb_books In this book, Tomoko Sawada continues on the autoportrait at the heart of contemporary Japanese society. This time, she explores the identity photos, which Japanese students take at the end of their studies when they start looking for work. She retains the well-established formal conventions – dress, posture, neutral facial expression – but adds a subtle variation. Starting with a fixed photographic method, which imitates the photobooth with its similar lighting, unchanging framework and pose-taking, she multiplies the images by playing on her hairdo, her makeup and her facial expression. Erwin Wurm Photographs, @erwinwurm , published by @rvb_books in 2020 This book could be one of our fav photobooks newly-arrived in store. Erwin Wurm’s photographs wrestle with issues adjacent to those of photography about photography – his interest lies in making sculptures about sculpture, and using photography (and to a lesser extent, video) to both enable that investigation and document his results. Over a career that now stretches back four decades, Wurm has playfully experimented with what sculpture is, what it can (and cannot be), and how it is defined in the first place, using both performance and participation as methods for unraveling its boundaries and limits. The resulting works (and photographs of those works) are evidence of his unpretentiously inventive imagination and his consistent use of conceptually-rigorous improvisation that masquerades as irreverent fun. “Dry” and “dull” are criticisms that aren’t usually leveled at Wurm’s wide ranging output. This thick photobook delivers a comprehensive retrospective survey of Wurm’s work in photography and video, gathering together individual photographs, grids and series, contact sheets, video stills, and other image arrangements into a dense compendium of imagery, all of it interrogating the nature of sculpture.
