8th September 1814 death of English Radical, coin maker and pamphleteer Thomas Spence, one of the leading revolutionaries of the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. Advocating for the common ownership of land, and selling his pamphlets and other books from a book stall in High Holburn, London, he was imprisoned multiple times for his political belief on charges of seditious libel, and high treason; including being incarcerated in Newgate Gaol in 1794, and 1801. Due to the events of the French Revolution, and fearing support for parliamentary reform, and what were considered radical ideals; the government suspended habeas corpus, and civil liberties in 1794. As well as creating a nationwide spy network with ordinary people being encouraged to denounce those considered as "radicals". To circumnavigate these oppressive measures, Spence also restamped existing coinage with radical slogans and iconography, and redistributed the coins back into circulation, as a way of spreading radical ideas. After his death on this day, and driven to action by the events of the Peterloo Massacre of 1819, his followers numbered amongst those who were involved in the failed ‘Cato Street Conspiracy’ of 1820; which attempted to murder the Prime Minister and members of the government.
