Geek Catholic Callout Continued
I wanted to keep my initial callout to a simple question in hopes people would be more likely to respond. This post is more of an explanation of the sorts of people I am looking for and why.
My friend and I are pretty nerdy by most people's standards. Both of my parents were original Trekkies who watched the series when it first aired. My friend started off more of a Rennie, but also was DM for many a game during highschool. The two of us organized and ran a LARP in college that stared off as Amtgard but progressed to a system she wrote herself. She also fought light in the SCA for awhile, and I worked for a wargaming company creating minis for 5 years.
If you, like my spellchecker, are completely baffled right now, then this post is probably not for you. But if you understand even half of it, even if it doesn't describe things you are interested in, please keep reading. As you know, I am seeking a wide variety of people here. For example, I haven't even mentioned comic books or anime. That's because my knowledge in these areas is just enough to know I would quickly reveal my ignorance.
Our concern is that geeks, like in the real world, are not particularly well catered to in the Church. Now we're not looking for any change to the Mass. (no youth, teen, etc type labels. Mass is fine the way it is, ty) We are more speaking to the sorts of activities available outside of Mass. The bible studies, retreats, etc. There seems to be an overwhelming push for Ignatian spirituality. While there is nothing wrong with it, it doesn't work for everyone.
I don't gush with feelings over bible passages. I don't want to talk about what feelings I do have with others as I find that awkward and less than helpful. My friend has been thrown out of our parish's campus center because she was having a friendly debate about sci-fi movie physics that someone mistook for an argument. Do you have similar difficulties?
There are a couple of directions I'd like to take this discussion. One is how do we help others like us? Geeks are often introverted and naturally sparse. So how do we gather online and/or in our parishes to help each other spiritually? What are our spiritual needs? What kind of activities appeal to the geek Catholic?
The other thought I have is how completely awesome would it be to have a sci-fi convention that is Catholic friendly? Heck, even Christian friendly would do. We all know there's that undercurrent of conservatism in even the most liberal con. But we have to skulk around in quiet. Don't talk to loudly about politics. Steer clear of the poly/BDSM section of the con as best you can. Tolerate the subtle and not so subtle jabs against morality and Christianity quietly. What if there was a con with non of that? Or, as long as we're dreaming, panels geared toward the above paragraph topics, or toward geek Catholic things like discussing morality in fantasy worlds. I want this con to exist. I no longer feel I can enjoy the conventions that are out there, but I miss that sort of activity. Anyone else interested?
I would like the geek Catholics to gather and discuss. Tag posts with geekcatholic
