Thor 3D review
.
The Review
Thor is up there with Marvel's best so far. It breezes along at a rapid pace from set piece to set piece, finding time for a little character development, a little comedy and a few winks to savvy comic book fans. Chris Hemsworth delivers a performance which demonstrates quite a range since Thor is no two dimensional hero, but a layered character who grows convincingly throughout the course of the film from arrogant war monger to selfless saviour.
Natalie Portman is determined, dedicated and sweet as Jane Foster, and has great chemistry with Hemsworth. Tom Hiddleston is sly yet sad as Thor's jealous brother, Loki, and Anthony Hopkins does exactly what you expect of him as Odin, Thor's father and ruler of Asgard.
The supporting characters dont get a lot to do. Thor's band of warriors are two dimensional at best, but enjoyable to watch so we're hoping to see more from them in a sequel. The same can be said for Jane's colleagues. However, one of the stand out characters has to be Idris Elba's stoic badass, Heimdall, guardian of Asgard, who with limited dialogue makes an impact, figuratively and literally.
Director Kenneth Branagh, with his history of adapting Shakespeare, manages to deliver the drama and heap gravitas upon what could have otherwise fallen into Flash Gordon-esque campness. He proves that he can direct action too, particularly with a brutal, pulse racer of an opening battle between Thor's men and the Frost giants (as creepy as they are physically threatening) which far outdoes most of what the fantasy genre has had to offer in the last five years.
The movie it is most similar to in terms of pacing and overall feel is Iron Man, which is crucial considering that it is fully intended to feel as if Thor's reality is the same as Iron Man's, and the introduction of Thor's mythology and "magic" to the otherwise tech dominated world of Iron Man, The Hulk et al was the biggest hurdle to overcome for the future Avengers movie-the inclusion of S.H.I.E.L.D, a mention of Tony Stark, as well as the teaser shot of Thor's hammer at the end of Iron Man 2 obviously helped.
On to the 3D.
In some scenes, particularly on the rainbow bridge and on the opening sweep through Asgard, the 3D is jawdroppingly impressive. A ceremony in Thor's honor follows on directly from this and demonstrates the contrasting effect of 3D, which at its worst creates an artificial feel that makes the performers appear like cut outs against the CGI backgrounds. Some of the action tends to become a bit blurry as well, so we're looking forward to a re-watch on Blu Ray when it comes out.
THOR
Thor (2011)
I don't know what not to love at this movie. I mean, it has a nice story. The flow of the sequences were brilliantly made. The musical scoring blew me away (though not enough to exceed Daft Punk's work on Tron Legacy). Its casts did pretty well too. Thor himself (Chris Hemsworth) did a pretty convincing job as the arrogant mighty Thor. Though, I haven't seen him before on any shows or movies, seeing his job on this film is good I must say. And yes, Natalie Portman and Anthony Hopkins, 'nuff said. By the way, I saw this movie earlier this afternoon on 3D. Despite being a post-converted, I was impressed. Asgard is just WOW. Such a beautiful place. One more thing that I really loved on this film were the diagonal shots. Those shots were weird yet awesome. Is that the director's style? I am so digging it. And yes, the continuity on the Marvel World. That shot with the guy from SHIELD called Nick upon seeing the Mjolnir, it reminded me so much of that scene after the credits rolled on IronMan 2. Yes, I am a big fan of Marvel comics so the continuity of the story and characters excited me so much.
Overall, I enjoyed this movie. If you are undecided whether you'll see it on 3D or not, I'll say try it on 3D. The post-conversion is actually nice and it won't disappoint you. However, I will also see it on 2D to make a comparison.
And yes, there's one more reason why I loved this movie. It is because of Sif, yes, Jaimie Alexander. I had a huge crush on her since Kyle XY where she played as Jessie XX/Jessie.
Thor - Trailer (OFFICIAL)
I love a good action movie. Lets hope that the movie is as good as the trailer.
