On Brie Larson as Captain Marvel and the “can’t act” shit
So I watched Captain Marvel again and I finally understood where all the “she shows no emotions” criticism are coming from. You see, Brie Larson is an introvert and it shows on screen. That said, what I love about it is that even though she’s not as expressive as everyone else in the MCU, you could totally see it in her eyes what’s going on in her mind. Take for example when Carol Danvers and Nick Fury were in the records section and Fury asked her, “are you okay?” and she looks to the side saying, “Mmhmmm.” That was a simple line but you can see worry and other feelings swirling in her head.
And what about her training scene at the beginning? Remember, she was told—countless times—to keep her emotions in check. Here, some people may not see it in her eyes, but if you look closely at her fist and neck, it’s clear that all she wants to do is punch the shit out of him.
Another perfect example was when they took away her powers. She went from, “SHIT. WTF?!” To “Bitch, you have no idea what I’M capable of” real fast. Tell me how she is showing no emotions again?
And then, of course: that Thor-Carol scene in the Avengers: Endgame trailer that had everyone screaming in lesbian...
I love this scene because her reaction to Thor showing his manliness and his power was very subtle yet so strong. She was unfazed by his summoning his hammer and demeanor and, for a tiny second, seemingly challenging him to take her on. If you watched the trailer just once you won’t see it, but then if you look closely, it’s there in her eyes. The “I’m not afraid of you” look mashed with “Come on, God of Thunder. I dare you to use that Stormbreaker on me” look. It’s pretty powerful.
The thing is, Brie Larson’s Captain Marvel isn’t like how other female superheroes portray their characters in the MCU. Her struggles and emotions were more internal, it will take a fellow introvert to fully understand her. AND THAT’S OKAY.
It’s sad that there are other people who talk shit about the movie just because of some things she’s said in the past. I agree, it may not be THE BEST Marvel movie, but to me it’s got one of the best origin stories not just in the MCU, but in the entire superhero movies.
I know what you’re thinking. “You probably haven’t seen many origin stories if you think Captain Marvel is one of the bests.” Yeah, well, this is my opinion and you salty bitches can keep crying in the corner. KBYE.
