I've been doing more reading up on alien lore and backstory for my starfinder campaign because my ooze character Marmalade can shape change into creatures and tools and I found out about the Thorgathel!; A race of oozes that started as humanoids that intentionally devolved themselves and are attempting to devolve the rest of the sapient universe as well. they're very similar in skillsets and the fact that their existence is heavily symbiotic with another structure and specifically technology.
In their instance it's the armament that they ambulate around and electrically interface with, whereas in Marmalade's situation it's nanomachines (upb's) and mushrooms/fungi. Also their motivations are vastly different. Thorgathel believe that sapient creatures can only harm the universe and thereby are protecting it by reducing everyone to mindless blobs. But marmalades connection to creation and death has resulted in a "live in the moment, fix what you can touch" mentality. And seeing the juxtaposition to my characters ideals and existence really solidified them in my mind!
Another similarity but different is the exact inverse of their creation and existence in their current forms. Thorgathel intentionally reduced themselves to the intelligent ooze form they occupy and came to form a reliance on the armaments they ambulate with; whereas marmalade was happily existing as an ochre jelly and accidentally interacted with the fungal mutation that parasitically bound with them and changed them into the intelligent ooze they are, not quite reliant on the technology but undeniably bound to it.
