“Awake at last?”

“Can’t blame myself for trying to sleep through the cold, love,” Raine answered, slowly turning her body until she slid sideways off Susan’s chest, sitting upright against the headboard. In this manner, they could both get used to the sharp light of a December morning. It took longer than it had when they had settled in the cabin. Raine rued it at times. “Two old ladies, shaking the night’s fog from their heads.”

Beside her, Susan huffed. “ Hmm , you’re old, not me. Not yet. You’re a year past fifty, my dear.”

“And within five years, so will you be.”

“I do pray your mind never dulls.”

“I would rather die of mysterious causes on the twelfth hour of tonight than grow senile.”

Thank you for reading. I feel like now, I can finally be glad that Raine and Susan have at least one big fic detailing a happier fate than the one they had in the show. This was a true labour of love and it's been over a year in the making, which is to me an insane fact. I'm glad, I'm amazed and I'm also sad that this has come to an end, but all good things do.

“I’m here, I have you,” she quietly uttered against Susan’s forehead as the smaller woman settled against her. She felt the warmth of the other woman, thankful that it was so. “I will do better for you, for the girls… and myself. That I can promise to you.”

Raine Thornell does not die. In those seconds beforehand, Susan Hart makes an instinctual decision that changes everything. Raine's dreams of a life out of London had seemed so unreal, but now Susan finds herself grasping for the chance she is offered, and for everything Raine has to give.

Chapter excerpt: Abigail spoke up. Ever since going to a proper school, the same one Raine taught at, she had become well-spoken for a girl of fourteen, sharp beyond most of her peers. “Miss Susan, we were talking with Miss Raine the other night. See, most of us don’t have a last name or don't know ours. Sir MacIntyre and the office up on Fort William have been lenient with not pestering Miss Raine about it, but it’ll be no good when we need to find jobs outside of Miss Raine’s property,” she said, switching between pulling threads out of the carpet and looking Susan hesitantly into her eyes. “Now Miss Raine, she doesn’t want us to take hers, because she, uhm …”

“She said she wants the name Thornell to die,” Mercy piped up loudly.

Smothering a laugh, Susan nodded. “Yes, that sounds like something Raine would say.”

“So we all thought we could perhaps… take yours?” Abigail looked up, green eyes full of hope.

It was a look that Susan had seen seemingly so long ago, back in London when Raine spoke of the life they were living now. She understood why Raine had denied their request, given her hatred for her father’s name, but her own was a complication she did not often think about anymore. Smiling wryly, she sighed. “My name is not my own, children,” she said. “It was a farce to ensure my safety long ago, and though it feels more like me than my old one ever did, I’m not sure if that is something you would want to take over from me.”

This is the pre-final chapter! I’ll write the last one slowly, as I’m also slowly getting back into writing after taking a break :)

 Raine turned, finding Susan in the door opening, frowning and stepping up to her. Raine found her hands grabbed by Susan’s softer ones, squeezing them and steadying her in the moment.     

 “I am fine,” she said quietly. “Sometimes, especially since I’m free of it all now, my memory still assaults me. But I think they, Agnes and my mother I mean, would be happy with where I’ve ended up.”

 “They would be happy to see you flourish, love,” Susan assured her, stepping even closer. She smiled in the particular way that Raine knew well by now. She also knew what would come, Susan raising herself just a little to kiss her on the lips. The smaller woman drew back with a giggle and licked her lips briefly. “You -” she said as she laughed. “You taste of cinnamon and sugar. Have you been stealing bites here and there?”

 With a guilty look, Raine averted her eyes to the bowl of pie filling in progress. “Perhaps,” she admitted. It had been very tasty, and the smell alone was enough to make her hungry.

 “I want to taste it again,” Susan husked as she stood up on her toes to press her lips to Raine’s once more. They met with more passion this time, Raine stood there stunned for a moment, before she brought her hands up to the sides of Susan’s face and committed to the kiss.

Guess what, I finally uploaded those last two waltzes of the not-trilogy-anymore. Every year from 2016 to this year I’ve made a waltz. It’s an ongoing annual series, waltz #6 will be uploaded somewhere this year. They’re all shipping waltzes. One ship a year. As rule for myself: I can double up on actresses who play different characters but not three times in a row.

The bed had been an excellent purchase. Despite the fact that sleeping on a new mattress was always odd for the first few nights, Susan was already enjoying it. This was helped along greatly by the fact that Raine had plastered herself to her back. She was still asleep, her breathing slow and heavy in the crook of Susan’s neck. But there was light coming in through the new curtains that they had installed the evening prior, and Susan knew it was an important day.

“Wake up, darling,” she said, feeling along their sides until she found purchase on Raine’s ribcage, then softly rocking their bodies back and forth.

“No,” Raine mumbled into her neck, pressing her forehead against Susan’s hair. “Not yet…”

Laughing, Susan separated herself from the warm body that chased her with a pair of sleepy arms. She turned to look at her lover, whose eyes were open on a crack. In the low light of their room, it took a moment before Susan’s eyes focused properly. Something moved above Raine’s head, and for a second, it seemed as if her hair had gained a pair of yellow eyes. Then a little shape hurtled off the bed and sped off with a distressed mew.

“Look at that, you disturbed Agnes,” Raine said, propping herself up on an elbow and wiping hair from her mouth. “Mhh, I suppose we do have to get up. We’ll have guests soon and she’s never late. And I’m guessing you’re eager to try out our new tea set?

 “We do. We have all of the time that we are allowed together to learn about each other. For example, I’ve noticed you aren’t eating anything,” Susan said as she glanced at the chip in Raine’s hand before furrowing her brows. “You do recall what happened not that long ago when you didn’t take care of yourself?”

 “Yes, apologies. I’ll continue eating, it is just that I feel so many things when I look at you, or when you look at me. I had to pause to enjoy them, surely you understand,” she replied before popping a chip in her mouth and brushing a bit of dark hair from her eyes with a knuckle.

 “I do,” Susan replied with a gleam in her eye. “And I trust that you will keep your word and we may grow old together, keeping our health intact.”

 Each time Susan made references to their future together, something inside of her felt complete. As if everything had finally fallen into place. They had escaped London with nearly the entire group intact, they had pulled off a plan which ensured them a future in a place they could all call home. And she had found love.

 Her eyes wandered over the lake, contemplating it all for a few moments, her mind drifting through her recent past, only vaguely aware of the wooden fork in her hand and Susan’s thigh against her own. Her entire history was split between London and the city they were in now, she realised. Still, her mind continued to flit between past and present. What had transpired in the past two weeks, yes, but unexpectedly much further back, too.

Earlier, I did see Miss Susan bundle them up adequately, lest they get too cold in their rambunctious adventures outside. I am uncertain if the woman herself likes the snow. She has bought a fur hat to shield her ears against the cold, and muff of the same style for her hands. And of course, she never does join the children in their games.

Raine is more likely to do that. This very morning, I saw her join in on the hoopla and merrily chuck snowballs at the children. She retrieved shovels from the barn to help all of them build a system of walls as defences, all the way along the lands. When Susan came outside to call her partner in, she found herself target of their game. I suspect Raine will need to bribe her out of her icy mood later.
