On the coattails of your Bobby Fkay Post: I saw a recipe for "Mexican Street Corn Soup" on FB that used cilantro, onion, heavy cream, chicken broth, and queso fresco from a White Mommy Blogger. The first comment correctly pointed out those ingredients are not in MSC (EVER!) and said OP should be honest with her title, changing it to chowder. The rest, from non Mexicans, were statements along the lines of "Cuisine is what you want it to be!" "Stop crying cultural appropriation!" Your Thoughts?
I mean, that’s not even cultural appropriation- it’s just false advertising. If someone calls a recipe Mexican Street Corn anything, there’s very specific flavors I have in mind, and intentionally not bringing any of that? It’s not the same thing at all. I mean, I can kinda see some of it, like the chicken broth and cream being needed to make it a soup, and maybe cotija wouldn’t work great for the soup, but come on.
It’s like saying “This is my recipe for pizza!” and then serving me a cheeseburger, because well it’s got a baked wheat-based base and a tomato-based sauce and cheese and meat on it, and isn’t that really the same thing?
No. It isn’t.
Aaaaaaaand now I want street corn. Dammit.
