ANY time a prof says this to you, REPORT IT TO YOUR OFFICE OF DISABILITY ASAP. THIS SHIT IS NOT COOL, AND IS SPECIFICALLY AGAINST THE REGULATIONS THAT GOVERN THIS.
Yeah, I definitely will if they continue to give me a hard time about it. Usually, it’s in the very first meeting of the semester when I’m going over my accommodations with them & they just don’t understand what the accommodation in question actually means yet.
The most common one that people seem to have an issue with is that I get an extra 50% time on any timed quizzes, tests, etc. (anything in class basically, not homework stuff) A lot of profs will look at that and go ‘oh well it’s only a 5/10min quiz, that’s not hard/strenuous [FOR AN ABLED STUDENT], so you don’t really need extra time, right?’ and I have to explain to them that uh, yes, actually, I do. Between aphasia, hand pain, brainfog, etc. I can’t do as much in 5 mins as abled students can, especially if it’s like actually writing out an analytical response that can easily go to half a page or more.
I’ve only had one instructor a couple of years ago actually continue to resist after I explained all that (and you better believe I reported her ass to DS). I just wish they wouldn’t all have that knee-jerk assumption that my disability can’t possibly be that bad and I don’t really need all of these accommodations :P
(On the plus side, me complaining at home about this sort of shit helps my dad, who is a professor at my university, tho in a different department than where I’m studying, better understand how to interact with disabled students, and he helps pass along a good attitude to his fellow faculty ;) )
