I have been brewing a modern OW AU for a couple of weeks now. This is a bit of a preview :3

For some context:

Gossan and Feldspar are recovering delinquents (and siblings)!

Slate is only guilty by association.

Gossan and Felds ride motorbikes!

Felds is a speed demon!

Gossan has anger-management issues!

Slate is a mechanic (they are not allowed to touch Gossan's bike). They are also far-sighted and a nerd.

These punks are also a 3-hearthian band :D (for now)

But this is all pre- the actual AU story I'm working on :3 more to come!!

Stars, I could add so many questions. But I'll start with... Firsts 1, 2 and 3 for THPD AU gosslate? I'm very curious 👀

Ooh, yay 🙌

1. How did each of them realize they were in love?

Oh, for Slate it was probably when they were sharing a couple of beers with Gossan while they listened to rock music in their garage, and Gossan was laughing uncontrollably at something Slate said (Slate can't for the life of them remember what, all they remember thinking was that they wanted to make Gossan laugh like that all the time).

For Gossan, it was when Slate entered the boxing ring and flattened the dude who'd won by a fowl foul(?) that broke Gossan's wrist. They hadn't realized until this point that Slate wasn't only reading up on boxing technique to help Gossan train, but had been secretly training themself. They stopped calling Slate a guppy after that 🤣

2. Who fell first, and who fell hardest?

Slate fell first. But who fell hardest? 🤔 Both.

3. What was the confession like?

Ooh, hehe, okay, so I don't think a verbal confession featured for these two.

It was more like...

They'd just stopped to take a break from practicing a few songs (Slate's a guitarist, Goss is a drummer) to drink a couple of beers. Which turned into a LOT of beers. And, well, with the privacy (they rarely had a moment without Feldspar around), heavy rock playing in the background, and sitting really close together on the couch, and both of them having lost their reservations, they caved into their mutual attraction (understatement) and kissed (which didn't end there, but, yk...)

THPD AU Young Felds (WIP)

Style test for THPD modern AU character expression sheet I started working on, starring Feldspar!

Some lore:

Felds is Gossan's younger sibling, an adrenaline junkie, and high-school dropout. They were often picked on as a hatchling because of their timid and weak appearance, which led to them learning to fight back (and earned themself a reputation as a menace in the process).

In their later teens, Felds takes on a job as a delivery driver alongside Gossan, which is where their love (read: obsession) for motorbikes begins. During this period, they were also the lead vocalist of a little garage band made up of themself, Gossan, Slate (and sometimes Hornfels and Esker).

Unfortunately, they get themself into some dangerous situations and learn some bad habits. After a particularly nasty incident involving Goss and Slate, Esker intervenes and ropes the Chaotic Three into police cadet training.

Fast-forward +-10 years, and Felds is a (mostly) morally upstanding citizen, has become fluent in Owlkian as a result of sharing a prison cell with Kaepora (Prisoner) for a while (don't ask), is a speed-demon police Sargent by day, and a travelling dirt bike/rally driver for kicks in their free time (and is still a part-time delivery driver lol).

More character and world-building lore to come :)

THPD Gossan (Young)

So, I mentioned in my previous post that my modern AU Gossan has anger management issues. Can you guess what they do to deal with it?

Boxing!!!

Slate even helps them practice :3 which means they've gotten their nose broken, and had to get new specs more than once.

Why does Gossan have anger issues? Because they and Felds used to get bullied for being short as hatchlings, and Gossan is very protective of their sibling :3

Unfortunately, Goss has gotten themself into bad situations more than once (where they underestimated their opponent, or got ambushed by a gang of Nomai punks with a grudge).

When they're really angry, they resemble Feldspar more :D

On that note, all races from the game are present in this AU, which makes for some fun situations :D More on that later!

Here's a little tidbit:

'Slate watched at the angry being before them carefully. Gossan looked about ready to rip their head off.

They really should have chosen their words more carefully.

Yes, Slate knew quite well that Gossan could probably kill them.

And yet, they never once feared for their safety around their friend, not even when Gossan was in their most explosive fits of rage. Because they knew where that anger came from, who it was for, and where it started and ended.

But Gossan and their sibling were also idiots. That meant they bit off far more than they could chew more often than not. This was one of those occasions.

And while Slate knew when to back off, they also knew when it was time to speak up, lest someone dear to them end up in a hospital bed.

This was one of those times.

They'd rather put up with an irate delinquent now than do damage control later.

"You're not going anywhere," Slate said, putting a hand on Gossan's shoulder.

Gossan shoved that hand away quickly.

"The hell if you think you can stop me!" they shouted.

Slate lifted their hand again, reaching for the smaller hearthian-

Gossan threw their fist-

Slate caught it deftly.

Gossan growled. Their teeth were beared, their eyes narrowed and feral. Slate was sure it would have had a cowing effect on anyone else.

"I'll kick your ass, Slate! Get out of my way!"

Gossan punched with their other fist.

Slate caught that one too. Then they tightened their fingers over Gossan's hard enough to be painful. They watched as their friend hunched slightly and grimaced.

"The fu-!?"

"Don't forget who trains with you every day, Goss," Slate said sternly as they leaned down, simultaneously pulling both of Gossan's arms toward themself and outwards, "I know every move you'll make before you make it," they finished lowly-

-and quickly slid a leg behind Gossan's knees, and swiped the smaller adult's legs out from underneath them. They followed as Gossan's back hit the floor, stooping down so they could pin the smaller's arms to their own chest, then they sat on Gossan's stomach and used their weight to hold them down.

Gossan spat a healthy amount of cusses before shooting the taller a death glare, "What the hell do you think you're doing?!"

"Stopping you from being a dumbass."

Gossan struggled, snarling and tugging their arms hard. It wasn't easy to keep them pinned.

"Get the **** off! I have to-"

"No you don't, you idiot! They'll kill you!"

Gossan struggled more, then stopped and gave Slate a cold stare. Their shoulders rose and fell rapidly, and their nostrils flare as they seethed.

"They hurt Feldspar," they hissed, "they're going to pay." '

6. What is their favourite physical trait of each other's?

GosSlate!!

Okay, you've read some of my fics, so you know I've HC'd that Hearthians are genetically driven to find taller mates very attractive, so Slate's got that going for them lol. Other than their height, I think Gossan likes Slate's smile (which is always a little lop-sided and used to make them look mischievous, but now that they're older and have the 'crows feet', just makes them look cute)

Slate has always thought that Gossan has a handsome face and jawline, and appreciates their strong build despite their short stature

I imagine this bleeds over into the THPD AU as well ☺️

RegBro!!

Reg likes Gabbro's snaggle tooth very much (they're a little obsessed– might just be the assymetry asymmetry triggering their little neuro divergent brain). But they also like Gabbro's long limbs.

Gabbro likes watching Reg's eyes because they're very expressive. Is that their fav trait, though... 🤔

Yeah... think I'll leave it at that.

8. Are they each other's "type"?

GossSlate (Postcards)!!

Haha, good question! They grew up together, were basically teenage sweethearts, and, if circumstances were different, probably would have paired up really early on. They're bonded quite closely, and even if their personalities clash often, they are still the main person in each other's radar. As for 'types' though...

Gossan would like it if Slate showed more care, forethought, and consideration in many avenues (not just ship safety standards), and they would appreciate it if Slate was more mindful of their own emotions and shared their thoughts more freely.

Slate only wishes Gossan didn't react so quickly/emotionally (and I mean this in an angry/indignant sense) to things.

I'm working on something that demonstrates that they are both still struggling with/working on these little(big) niggles in their relationship :3

GossSlate(THPD)!!

Okay, here we have a divergence. Because of the premise/backstory I have set up for these two (and everyone else), you could say that, at least initially, Slate and Gossan were NOT each other's type.

When they met in highschool, Slate was an introverted, lanky, bookish science/car nerd from a decent-ish family; while Gossan was an orphan, a delinquent in the making, and quite rough around the edges thanks to mistreatment/prejudice/Life™. They initially viewed Slate as annoying and cowardly before they got to know them. Then they hung out for a while (spoilers: the result of Feldspar's sudden obsession with motorbikes and Slate's amateur mechanical knowledge).

When Gossan dropped out of highschool to start working as a delivery driver (and picked up illegal boxing on the side), Slate started maintaining their bike and helping them train. Of course, to keep up with Gossan, Slate had to get kind of fit themself (cue 'Eye of the Tiger')...

Anyways, Slate never stopped being a nerd, and Gossan remained a delinquent for a while, but through many hours/days spent together, and on seeing Slate's skill, determination, and (later, very unexpectedly) their ability to stand up in a fight, Gossan very much started to view Slate as their type.

Whether Gossan was Slate's type or not is irrelevant. They fell head over heels for the short fighter within a week of hanging out with them and Feldspar 🤣 This probably had something to do with Gossan's reasons for being such a rough nut in the first place: their dedication to looking out for Feldspar, which was the result of their big heart.

Haha. This is hard to answer. I think if the time loops hadn't been a thing, these two would not have fallen inside of each other's radar.

As you know from Refraction, Reg initially thought of Gabbro as a mooch-dweeb. But being Time-Buddies changed that. Then Reg came to appreciate Gabbro's calmness, their reasoning/deduction skills, and their overall chillness. You could say Gabbro grew on Reg.

Then they were hooked lol.

Gabbro likes tall Hearthians, so from that point of view, Reg doesn't fit into their 'type'. But Gabbro appreciates the fact that Reg is a little bit of an oddball much like themself, and that they still have so much enthusiasm for life (something Gabbro lost a while ago). Reg also grew on Gabbro in that way (and others, but you know the rest haha).
