Seuthes III was a king of the Thracian kingdom of Odrysia during the late 4th century BC. We don't know many details of his reign but the discovery of his tomb in Bulgaria in 2004 has provided archeologists with a treasure-trove of artifacts including this remarkably lifelike portrait of Seuthes himself in bronze.

Horns wail, hooves thunder, the mares of Diomedes are upon you!

It seemed rude not to get a picture of all the horsies at once. By all accounts the Thracians were serious about their horses, producing hardy steeds to match belligerent & pugnacious riders. I only have 16 of them so far, but I still think they look rather intimidating all charging at you at once.

King Diomedes of Thracia was probably so heartbroken after Heracles stole his man eating horses:

Diomedes: My blood thirsty horses! My poor man eating horses!

Person: My lord, your son also died!

Diomedes: ...

Diomedes: Oh, my poor horses

The Dacians were the ancient Indo-European inhabitants of the cultural region of Dacia, located in the area near the Carpathian Mountains and west of the Black Sea.

They are often considered a subgroup of the Thracians.

This area includes mainly the present-day countries of Romania and Moldova, as well as parts of Ukraine, Eastern Serbia, Northern Bulgaria, Slovakia, Hungary, and Southern Poland.

This drawing is based on a fascinating design I saw on a Thracian helmet from fourth century BCE. While the symbolism might have been of conquest, power, and abundance, in my view the magical bird represents protection and guidance to a safer place. I hand printed my digitized drawing on a Risograph using golden ink and it came out great. Few prints are available here.
