i know i use my words flippantly. i know that i call dion my dad like it’s nothing, but it feels like it. what else am i supposed to say? my dion? but i’ve never done it with anyone else. not until now. somehow pash is mom. i called pash mom. how am i supposed to get past that? i’m projecting all of these stupid feelings onto adults that i feel more responsible than. it’s stupid! it’s fucked up!!!

they’re just going to leave, like everyone else. even pash, the only one who came to my very, very late birthday party. she’s gonna give up on me like the rest of them. i have to remember that i can’t give up on me. i gotta keep going.

what is your relationship with pasha novak?

he talks about her. in his sleep, to his siblings, to strangers. there is nothing like finding a kindred spirit in the biggest city in the world. if it was chance, or luck, or fate, he doesn’t know. either way, he thanks the universe for the gift of pash novak. it’s usually a blessing and sometimes a curse. if he could save anyone in this world, it might just be her.

she’s... complicated. not someone (or something) he could easily fix. that’s all he seemed to do, fix things. he’s tired of that. pash doesn’t come wrapped in ribbons and silk, she may as well be a scratch and dent item. but that’s what makes her pash. her bumps, her bruises, her scars -- she’s tough. she’s brave. that’s why he loves her. he wouldn’t have her any other way.

the two of them could not be more different. she thinks about this a lot, actually. when she first met pash she was barely out of college and soft-spoken as ever. pash rescued her. that loud-mouth saved her from collapsing in on herself. she’s the yin to her yang, the balance on her scales. it is not about compliment. it’s about contrast.

she can’t call pash a mother figure. it doesn’t work like that. houston doesn’t quite know what a mother is, but she knows what it’s not. pash is a cool aunt, if anything. she cares. that means a lot. but she doesn’t take care of her. hell, neither does dion, really. only person that takes care of hous is hous. pash just makes it easier. lightens the load.
