Their travels had them arriving back in Rosaria later than they had imagined. Even with the aid of the Obelisks, their latest quest had taken hours to arrive at thendesignated area, dragged on by the need to fight beasts that continuously popped up (and often at the most inconvenient of times). Now that they had completed their task, they needed to reconvene with the merchant that had requested their assistance in the first place.

Unfortunately, it was far too late in the evening for the merchant to still be lingering — the sun had set over the horizon hours ago, and his customers had no doubt departed with it.

Fortunately, the merchant’s cart was stationed right outside of Martha’s Rest. And Martha, a friend to Cid and ally to the Hideaway, was always willing to welcome them into her inn with open arms. A roof over their heads and warm fire would be much welcomed after an exhausting day spent battling monsters.

Their luck, however, seemed to end there when Martha announced that while she would always be happy to provide shelter, there was only one room left at the rest. Thus, Jill and Clive would have to share the room. And while their situation had lead them to share a space on more than one occasion (she recalled sleeping under the somewhat dilapidated roof of Hanna Murdoch’s barn), there was something a bit….different about this situation. The thought of sharing such a private space with Clive had her cheeks flushing a soft shade of pink, which was thankfully hard to notice in the dim light of the inn now that the sun had set.

Clive, practical as ever, had graciously accepted Martha’s offer before they were lead up to the room.

Alone behind the closed door now that Martha had dismissed herself, the silverette couldn’t keep her gaze from falling upon the bed placed in the center of the room — the one bed.

“It was…quite the long day,” she remarked, thinking to make small talk as she moved to set down her rapier on the small desk in the corner of the room. “We will have to meet with the merchant early in the morning so we can hurry and return to the Hideaway. You should try to get some rest.”

Standing in the heart of the Hideaway, she couldn’t help but to smile to herself. Thanks to the work of Tarja, she was healed and had enough energy to finally walk about, taking in every person that had come to call this place home as they shuffled about their work.

She never would have imagined a day where so many bearers could live in peace. They seemed content — happy even — and each seemed to have their own place and importance to the Hideaway. She didn’t know how Cid had managed it or how long ago, but this place operated like a well oiled machine. It was astonishing, to say the least (and her heart may have swelled at the thought that such harmony may still be possible). 

Hearing the steps that approached from behind, the silverette spun on the ball of her foot, noting the man whom’s work she’d just been admiring. 

“To think that one man was able to create all this,” she mused before offering a small bow of her head in respect. Yes, those that called this place home had undoubtedly contributed to its success and ability to slowly flourish, but everyone in the Hideaway seemed to look to Cid with reverence or for guidance. “This place is impressive, truly. Also, I should thank you for helping to save me.”

“I was beginning to think I may never see you again.” Which was a bit ironic to say considering there was a period of time when she’d been positive she would never see him again — when she thought him dead while she was captive to the Iron Kingdom, forced to do their bidding.

When Clive swore he saw Joshua in Oriflamme after his battle with Ultima, she’d wondered if it had been a figment of his imagination. But how else could they explain the two of them still being alive? Ultima clearly could have ended them both that day after they’d been rendered unconscious, yet they’d both survived unexpectedly. To further prove this surprising new twist in their story, Clive was left with a single Phoenix feather that still glowed bright and warm with the flame of the Phoenix.

It could have been left by no other.

For years it felt as if they were chasing ghosts — always so near to their paths crossing but missing each other by a breath. Despite her focus on helping Clive to rebuild the Hideaway and continue to free bearers, she’d always looked over her shoulder, as if she might see Joshua on a phantom wind.

Those days were behind them now. The three children from Rosaria’s duchy were finally reunited, and Jill couldn’t be happier. That being said, she had more than a few questions for him, as she was sure Clive did too, though the elder Rosfield sibling was not around to ask.

“Tell me everything. I know it may seem trivial, but I want to know everything that happened these eighteen years.”
