Sleepover

Penny got on the bus to Desert Pines after work armed with an over-stuffed bag and the reassurance that, yes, Iliana still wanted her to come over to watch Pokémon that night. She checked the messages once more on the ride there, just to be really certain, and the address and directions Iliana had given her twice more in case she missed something the first dozen times she had read it.

Finally, at the door to the apartment she was suddenly second-guessing, Penny hesitated. It wasn't too late to just go home, forget the whole thing. But the thought of having to explain herself to Iliana made her even more anxious, so with that logic in mind, Penny knocked on the door.

Yujin was careful not to burn herself as she lit the last of her scented candles. The room looked like something out of an indie movie - candles everywhere, a mattress on the floor covered in blankets and pillows, a collection of nail polish, ingredients to make a face mask, fairylights on the walls.

She and Shannon had planned this sleepover for a while, and after convincing their respective roommates that this was, in fact, a good idea (even though Yujin really shouldn’t be trusted around fire), they finally managed to set it up. Yujin was already in her unicorn onesie, looking more like a child than an actual adult.

There was a knock on the door and she cheerfully called out, “Come in!” With excitement in her eyes, Yujin pointed to the collection of dvds. “You can choose the movie~ since you got the snacks and all.”

As a kid, Yujin never got to have sleepovers like everyone else. She was pretty much completely friendless until high school, and even then she never had anyone she was really close to, someone she’d get an invite from. And inviting people over to her place was impossible given her father’s illness.

So this sleepover, as mundane as it might seem, was incredibly special to her.

“Am I finally getting an explanation as to why I smell smoke? And… blueberries, for some reason?”

“I don’t smell smoke.” A terrible lie, and Prudence obviously knew so, but she said it with a surprisingly straight face. No answer for the blueberries. Still blocking the door.

“Just meant to tell you, errr, my sister might be over in a bit. She’s...” ( absolutely not coming to put out a fire ) “...bringing me pyjamas. I forgot them.”
