Penny grinned up at her from the rock. “Yeah, I’ll see you.” She checked around to make sure no one was watching as she stepped down. “And...thanks,” she added with a glance back up at Iliana’s window.

Penny rolled her eyes as she made her way to the way too bright window. “Fuck,” she mumbled, shoving open the window. She straddled the windowsill, glancing down at the convenient stepping stool of a rock below. “Wait,” she said, turning back to Iliana before she left.

Iliana glanced anxiously back at her door before looking back at Penny. “What?’

“Fuck, I don’t know.” Iliana turned away from the window to help Penny look. She eventually found the shoe under the bed, kicked halfway behind Iliana’s hockey bag. She fished it out, then sat up with a groan. “Okay, here. Is there anything else?”

Penny grabbed her shoe from Iliana and shoved it on her foot. “I’m--I don’t know,” she whispered hoarsely. “I barely remember getting here.”

“Penny,” Iliana hissed, giving her a firmer shake. “My parents are awake!”

Penny cracked one eye open to look up at Iliana. Her anxiety was telling her to get up and get out of here before she got caught, but her hangover was making her body a little slow to catch up.

“Fuck…” she mumbled into her pillow.

Iliana stifled a groan and instead climbed over Penny to get out of the bed. “Hurry up,” she whispered, stumbling to the window to look outside and make sure the coast was clear. The morning sunlight was way too bright to get a good look, though, which only made her more antsy. “I don’t want to get in trouble!”

Penny felt her face flushing—was she that easy to read? “I’ll…try,” she promised.

Kinsey laughed again, and showed her to the door. “I’ll see you on Wednesday, then. Just go on in when you get there, the missile silo’s door is broken anyway, so no one minds it.”

Morning saw the both of them sleeping later than was advised for a sneaky exit. The shuffling footsteps of Iliana’s family members could already be heard in the hall and on the stairs, and muffled voices from the kitchen. 

Iliana woke slowly, then all at once when she realized someone else was in bed with her. She sat up, groaned at the aching in her head, and peered at her guest. “Hey,” she whispered, prodding Penny’s shoulder. “Hey, wake up.”

Penny, hungover and seriously enjoying how comfortable this bed was, only groaned and rolled away, seemingly unfazed by the other person in bed or the urgency of their situation.

“Penny,” Iliana hissed, giving her a firmer shake. “My parents are awake!”

It took only a couple of minutes to square away business, and then Kinsey grabbed a bit of scratch paper from under the register. “I typically go dancing Wednesday nights,” she said, quickly jotting down the time and place of the next dance. “It’s a bit out of the way. I’d offer a ride, but the car went with my husband.”

Penny winced sympathetically. “That’s okay—I take the bus everywhere anyway.”

She couldn’t help a small, shy smile as she looked down at the paper in her hand. “Um, I’m…excited,” she admitted, peeking back up at Kinsey.

“You should be!” Kinsey said with a small laugh. “You’re going to have a great time.”

“We’re drunk, everything’s stupid,” Iliana countered sleepily. She shifted to lay a hand on Penny’s shoulder, lightly, briefly, and then curled up on her half of the bed again. “Should get some sleep, so we can sneak you out again in the morning.”

Penny only nodded in the dark, not trusting her voice, and–with the aid of alcohol and a comfortable bed–found herself quickly drifting off to sleep.

The mention of jail hit Puck hard, and he flinched visibly. He knew how Allie felt about the intrusive enforcers of the law in Night Vale, be they official or vigilante, and the thought of her being detained by them for any amount of time hurt him as surely as the way they’d parted had.  “I’ll do what I can,” he said quietly, getting to his feet. 

Penny nodded distractedly. “Yeah,” she mumbled, glancing back toward the basement door, itching to get back to her work. “Me too.”

It took a while to get Cereza away from her friends at Desviado, and even longer for Penny to work up the courage to say what had been on her mind for a while now. 

Of course, courage came in the form of several shots of whatever drinks she could pronounce without sounding like an idiot, until she found herself leaning against the wall in the back of the club with Cereza, finally alone.

“Thanks for bringing me out here,” she started, knowing that in this state, once she started talking she wasn’t going to stop until she said what she wanted to say. “I’m having a lot of fun and…well, not just tonight. I’m having a lot of fun with you, and… I just…” She glanced down at the floor, embarrassed. “I haven’t felt this way about anyone in… I don’t know, probably ever.”

Penny shrugged and glanced back up at Cereza, unable to mask the hope in her eyes. “I like you, short-stuff,” she finally admitted. With only a moment’s thought, Penny reached out for Cereza’s hand, looking for some kind of comfort or assurance in the gesture. “Like, can’t get you out of my head, fucking butterflies in my stomach like you.”

Penny’s heart contracted in her chest as she watched Cereza flinch away from her. She didn’t know what else to do except let her get comfortable and listen to her story.

Tears stung in her own eyes, and she resisted the urge to reach out for Cereza again. “I…” Penny wasn’t sure what to say. “That’s not your fault. You–you didn’t make it, you didn’t plant it. You’re…that’s not on you, Cereza.”

“But if I wasn’t there… Twelve more people would have lived. All of them deserved it more than-“ She hiccuped again, smearing long streaks of mascara down her face as she wiped her eyes. “More than me. A broke ass ex-stripper with no future.”

A light flashed from Cereza’s pocket and played a gentle tune. It was her brother calling- it was far past midnight by now.

“Goyo would be better off too.”

“Stop that,” Penny told her, desperately searching for the right thing to say. “It was a bomb, Cer, it would have hurt people no matter what, whether you touched it or someone else did.”

She untied the flannel wrapped around her waist and held it out to Cereza, for comfort or to wipe the make up from her face or to blow her nose in for all Penny cared. Anything to take away some of this pain.
