The thread gauges have their own place in the manufacturing industry
The use of machinery has assumed great importance after the Industrial Revolution. Machines started replacing the Man at every opportunity. The greatest advantage of a machine doing things is that it saves time. At the same time, you get uniformity and a greater degree of accuracy as well. However, a machine is a machine. It has to go through quality checks as well. The machines have thousands of individual parts. Each part has to function in cohesion with the others. One ill-fitting screw can spell disaster. You can never imagine the extent of damage it can cause. Therefore, every screw, nut, or the smallest devices should undergo quality checks for determining their tolerance levels and utility factors. The thread gauges are the perfect instrument for measuring the tolerance factors in the threaded instruments.
The internal threads:
Threads can be of two types, the external ones, and the internal types. You require both these types of threads in an implement. The pipes that the people use for plumbing purposes in the households have both the internal threads as well as the external threads depending on their usage.
The external threads:
The screws, taps, etc are examples of externally threaded instruments. They have as much place in the industry as much as the internally threaded instruments have. In fact, both these tools have to complement each other and co-exist for the proper functioning of the machine.
The gauges:
These threaded implements should have a basic tolerance factor for their proper functioning. You use the thread ring gauges to determine the tolerance factors, pitch, etc of the screws and the other externally threaded implements. Of course, you would require the Go and the No Go ring gauges to determine this level of tolerance. The principle is such that the screw should easily pass through the Go ring while failing to do so with the No Go ring. This is the basic test. Every screw should pass this test for attaining the fitness to function in the industry.
At the same time, you would also find the implements with the internal threads. You cannot obviously use the ring gauges with these implements. You have to use the thread plug gauges for doing so. The principle is the same. The plug gauges gave the Go and the No Go sides to it. The plug has to pass through the Go side easily whereas it should not do so through the No Go side. In case it fails to do so, it entails that the implement is faulty and hence requires modifications.
The advantages
The advantage of the thread gauges is that it enables you to inspect the full thread profile and pitch. You need not have to impart a great deal of training to the workers for handling these implements. Any apprentice trainee would be able to do so. This test can easily identify the component as ‘Good’ or ‘Bad’. This would enable the manufacturer to take immediate remedial action.
Final words:
You should never underestimate the strength of the common screw. One wrong turn and you could head in a different direction.
