Tommy Hilfiger to launch US resale programme with ThredUp

Tommy Hilfiger is set to join the resale craze with the launch of a new 360-resale programme made in partnership with ThredUp.

The PVH-owned brand’s new initiative will allow US-based consumers to resell their Tommy Hilfiger items by filling a box and shipping it to ThredUp for free.

In return for resellable women’s, men’s or kid’s items, customers will receive Tommy Hilfiger shopping credit that is redeemable both online and in-store.

The American brand joins a growing list of retailers partnering with ThredUp’s Resale-as-a-Service offer, which aims to provide a customisable resale experience for its participants.

“This partnership is our latest step on our journey to becoming a fully circular brand,” says Esther Verburg, EVP sustainable business and innovation, Tommy Hilfiger Global and PVH Europe, in a release.

Verburg continued: “We’re excited to launch this program with ThredUp, which helps us create more value out of our existing product and connect with our consumers in a new way. The US market is packed with circular potential, and together with ThredUp, we’re hoping to make a long-lasting difference.”

The partnership builds on the brand’s ‘Waste Nothing and Welcome All’ mission, through which it has stated that it is aiming to be a fully circular brand by 2030.

It closely follows Tommy Hilfiger’s launch on rental platforms Rotaro and My Wardrobe HQ, both of which provide a circular clothing solution for UK customers.

Donation and recycling woes

Okay, looked into ThredUp and they are way too picky about the clothes they accept, and honestly I'm not going to make any money even if they do accept my clothes because I'm cheap poor trash and so are my clothes. Good thing is clothes that don't meet their standards get recycled. But I feel kind of bad about decent clothes being recycled simply because it doesn't have labels or has a little bit of fading.

But if I donate my clothes to Savers or Goodwill, there's no guarantee it does make it to the floor and doesn't simply get chucked to the dumpster.

I hate the thought of things just being thrown away. I had to throw a few pairs of old tattered underwear right now and it hurt. I wish we had local textile recycling.

I did find a site, ForDays, and you buy a bag and mail in your stuff in any condition or brand, and it either gets recycled or sold second hand. I know it's digging into my funds, but I'd rather pay a bit to recycle torn ratty jeans than just throw them in the trash.

I guess I could send them to ThredUp since they also recycle and their shipping labels are free...

Resale-as-a-Service platform thredUP Inc. and LG Electronics USA have partnered to help give clothes a second chance and reduce consumers’ fashion footprint. LG, a clothing-care and laundry innovator, will have thredUP power an apparel clean-out program through its RaaS platform. The program will be part of Englewood Cliffs, N.J.–based LG’s Second Life campaign, through which consumers can rid themselves of unwanted clothing from their closets and Oakland, Calif.’s thredUP, one of the largest online-resale platforms for women's and kids' apparel, shoes and accessories, will give them a “second life.”

“While LG's top-rated washers and dryers help millions of Americans take the very best care of their fabrics, we know that styles change, tastes change, even sizes change,” said Peggy Ang, head of marketing at LG Electronics USA. “As a leader in fabric care, LG is invested in how to care for your clothes throughout their life cycle—from how you wash them to how you ultimately pass them on. Working with thredUP on this nationwide initiative enables us to scale these efforts in a unique way while shining a light on the important issue of textile waste and inspiring consumers to take responsible action for the planet.”

For consumers in the United States to give second life to their clothes, they can order a thredUP x LG Donation Clean Out Kit or print a donation label online at LGSecondLife.com or thredUP.com/LG. Customers can then fill their kit or any shippable box with women’s and kids’ apparel, shoes and accessories and ship them to thredUP free of charge, where the company will make the pieces available on its marketplace. LG and thredUP will also donate $5 to a select charity for each donation kit received.

“At thredUP, we believe that to take fashion from linear to circular we need to rethink every aspect of the clothing life cycle,” said Senior Vice President and General Manager of Resale-as-a-Service at thredUP Pooja Sethi. “We are thrilled to work with an innovative company like LG to power apparel clean-out for their customers and believe this deal shows that any company—not just fashion retailers—can participate in apparel resale through RaaS, reaching new audiences and paving the way for a more sustainable future for fashion.”
