This scene was designed to mirror what racing teams do on instagram to engage with fans - where drivers do silly games or silly QnA's so that fans can get to know the driver- however I think the intention slips coming from feedback I have gotten. This is the scene as I wrote it: A couple of days later, when they were sitting on the teal couch, in front of Jess’s camera filming a promo video for TikTok, Jess asked Ryan if he knew what Matt’s favourite colour was, which was yellow.
However, assuming Ryan even paid attention to him, Matt wouldn’t be surprised if he picked red - Matt’s car was red, his wallet was red, his phone case was red. Anyone who knew him could be forgiven for thinking red.
Instead.
“Oh, it’s, like, Kōwhai,” he said casually, before he grinned, “which means yellow, for those uncultured ones out there.”
It took all his strength not to freeze in shock, like a deer in the headlights, and instead manage a half nod, because yes, that was right. The colour of his favourite hoodie, the colour of aspen, birch, cottonwood, and larches back home in Autumn, the colour of wild flowers.
“And, Matt, we almost don’t have to ask since, clearly, it’s black, but what is Ryan’s favourite colour?”
“Green,” Matt said, then cleared his throat because apparently his voice had decided to crack like he was fourteen again and asking someone to slow dance in the school gym. “Forest green, specifically.”
Then his eyes met Ryan’s, for a moment he forgot where they were -
The next question came from Jess, and Matt snapped back into reality and later ignored the online comments.

To be fair, Matt looks good in any colour - but we love him in Black and Teal Then this is my proposed changes to make it clearer:
Crushes were nothing new to Matt, he had crushes before - hell, when he was fifteen he had the biggest crush on Greg Riley. This is how he knew that this crush on Ryan was nothing to worry about - it was just a stupid crush on his stupid teammate who was an asshole.
Except, when he took the time to check-in with Jess on her side hustles or brought Damien a proper coffee, or reluctantly told Matt he was doing alright.
It was hard to reconcile asshole Ryan with Ryan who seemed to pay attention to the people around him, who could make a joke, who paid attention to Damien’s strategy meetings behind the bravado.
Things weren’t help by the constant social media content they were forced to make, playing games, answering stupid questions, standing side by side, close enough to see the change from off camera Ryan to on camera cocky know it all.
One particular video idea stuck in his mind, and he has a terrible feeling that he may remember it forever, one day when he’s eighty, which is how unhealthy this whole thing is getting, is when Jess had them do a pop quiz on each other.
She sat them down on the the teal couch, where she started firing random questions at each other about the other driver from the fans. Which was fine, Ryan protested more than Matt did, which was normal.
