Three and the start of the Sec Unit Revolution
Lyrics from “Blindness” by Metric
just finished network effect and so much to say and also i just know so many people mentioned how bizarr everything must have been for three
like everything happening in network effect is off the scales by any mesurement and becoming a rouge sec unit is not exactly something you ever expect but like? the first 5 minute on art specifically.
everything before? not so great and a mess but mostly its still "protecting clients" from hostiles so thats fine. it knows how to do that even without the governer modul looming over it!
while scary and confusing having freedom is nice but its also nice to still have protocols for stuff that help you navigate situations! like helping you interact with humans associated with clients.
except the humans come right up to you, neither acting like you are scary nor like you are an appliance on the cognitive levle of a roomba. in fact they just start talking to you like a person and also they immediatelly assure you that they (squishy unarmed humans) are not going to hurt you (armored armed sec unit). and thats like. ????? you are so so confused.
there is no protocol for that. there isn't even anything close to usful for this.
they might have just caused a little system crash in you. its so confusing. not that you have any time to figure out how to respond to that.
suddenly you have a monstrous entity in your head. its the most terrifying thing you have ever encountered. it might be considered uncomprehending horrors by all mesurements. it tells you it will brutally murder you if you even so much as think of hurting anyone here.
this is the scariest moment in your life and you are very glad you do not have a digestive system because that would be a mess. at least you know how to response to that. because a) you do not want the terrifying monstrous entity to brutally murder you and b) you didn't want to hurt anyone anyways
while this extreamly frightening but brief exchange has been going on the humans you have never seen until right now are seemingly already outlining a plot to save you (what did you miss where this suddenly became a situation in wich you need saving? you are soo confused). the plot apparently involves but from the sound of it is probably not limited to faking your death.
the whole concept of humans thinking about how to save a sec unit is so backwards to you it might give you another error. but next thing you know all the humans and the terrifying entity of the ship are arguing about saving another sec unit. so it seems you somehow stumbled into a group where that is just... a thing they do, apparently.
because the arguing has zero to do with wheter or not its worth saving. the consensus is clearly "we will get sec unit back or so help the people that captured it". what they don't agree on is whats the best way to do so and how much the terrifying entity gets to bomb the colony.
you are so utterly confused. you understand next to nothing about what is going on but you participate in it anyway. there is no protocol for saving a sec unit but one thing you do understand is how to handle client retrival and hostage situation.
@murderbot-maladies-event day 7: nose bleed
couldn’t decide between MB or Three so I did both!!! MB is the blue and Three is the colored Bc I draw it w a three in its ear
Anyway Thank you for hosting this!!!!! I joined super late but gosh these prompts were great!! So glad this was a thing so I could break into drawing stuff for MB!!
To me Three is the younger sibling who wants to impress its older sibling (Murderbot) who it thinks is cool as hell.
And Murderbot is the older sibling who is confused why it’s younger sibling is such a dork.
Sofi, if the adults around her weren’t such kill joys: adopting every rogue SecUnit Three frees
Every other corporate entity that is already pissed off that Preservation keeps losing them money: And they’re stealing SecUnits to build their own army of constructs!
Having now finished System Collapse, I can’t stop thinking about the SecUnits that Murderbot has freed. If we take the idea that Three had a much better/friendlier relationship with the other SecUnits it was stationed with (which seems to be somewhat likely) than Murderbot ever had, I wonder what that could mean for the SecUnit we see at the end of the book that had chosen to go back to pretend it isn’t rogue. What if B-E SecUnits operate differently than the company Murderbot came from? When 2.0 first contacts Three, it assumes that this SecUnit has the same protocol as it does (i.e. not being allowed to speak to other units), but what if there was no such restriction on the B-E SecUnits. What if they were often allowed to communicate with each other? I don’t think it would for warm fuzzy reasons, but from a security standpoint, it would make sense if you have a group of SecUnits, they are allowed to share information and coordinate where necessary. I’m sure there was some of that going on in Murderbot’s company as well, but maybe instead of it being a you can communicate in ‘x’ scenario, with the B-E SecUnits it’s more of a general rule, something they don’t need specific permission for or something. Add in to that the possibility that the B-E SecUnits might be used to working with the same units on a regular basis, I could see the argument that genuine connections may have been formed amongst what I’ve been thinking of as squads or teams (for example, you have these three SecUnits that are used to working together/possibly have been deployed together for an extended period of time). My point is that ever since finishing the book, I can’t help but wonder if part of the reason that the SecUnit at the end goes back is (in part) for the other members of its team. Like it is now free, so it goes back to free the others. And then this becomes a thing. These rogue units, pretending to still be perfectly ‘normal, nothing to see here’ are steadily freeing the units they encounter/work with on a regular basis. We know that Murderbot does not do this, but if the B-E units have a better relationship with each other, I think not would be an interesting narrative arc.
I would also find it hilarious if they keep passing the helpme.file among themselves, each one passing it onto the next bot in the line (maybe adding in some of their own memories of being free as well) as they free more and more units until Murderbot becomes an almost mythic figure to them. It would hate this, but I think it would be hilarious. (It also has the added narrative weight of having the bot standing up and freeing themselves opposed to being saved by some well meaning humans. Something that is not common to these types of stories.)
