the scenes with the microfilament in three-body problem have the kind of impact i think stephenson wanted to have with Reason. except instead of just a gleeful rambo bloodbath and microdetailed descriptions of weapons power, liu actually has his protagonist begin to feel the horror of the violence he's become complicit in
man as someone who usually likes hopeful sci-fi i am enthralled by how dark the cosmology of three-body problem is. extremely high-level technology has the capacity to utterly and irreversibly ruin the universe and this is not a hypothetical because it has happened already. and no one cares about the long-term danger so long as it helps their short-term goals. this is the one true constant.
anyways loved these books, 11/10 would recommend to everyone ever.
fucking crazy that these aliens all live in the universe that has been irreversibly ruined by previous overuse of these weapons and then they still choose to use more and more of these weapons like okay if this continues on the entire universe will be one single one-dimensional line. are you stupid. (<- says while living on a planet with unchecked global warming that we keep making worse)
i was like "wow why are they taking cheng xin and yun tianming's meeting so seriously, why are they ready to kill cheng xin if tianming says anything slightly questionable", and then i remembered he is literally only there because he is spying on the trisolarans with everyone's knowledge..... so much happened since the beginning of the book that i forgor 💀

finally started death's end and i was like "what are we doing in 15th century constantinople........" but i think i know where this is going. it's dimensional bullshit isn't it. what she said about places being open to her sounds exactly like what the trisolarans said explaining the sophon's ability to see things in more than 3 dimensions.
