"My love of fairy types began with Cosmo, my Clefairy. My parents gave them to me as a Cleffa when I turned four. I don't remember it, exactly, just how happy I was to have a Pokemon of my own! It was a great starting point for learning how to care for a Pokemon properly!

Cosmo's been with me for everything. He was my best friend when my mother lost it after Father and Gladion disappeared, and was the one being I trusted completely before I too ran from Paradise."

And it's real. As soon as he feels Kurda's arm around him to prop him up, his mind can finally accept that it's all real. If Gavner had been a century or so older, more firmly rooted in the clan's traditions, he wouldn't have accepted the help — he knows full well to expect disappointed looks and glares from his superiors. But now, but here, to accept assistance should be fine — he can't be helped to council, but there is nothing stopping him from being helped at council.

( And he leans into Kurda, letting the older General support his weight. )

( It's about the survival of the fittest among their kind, and anyone who cannot help themselves is deemed unfit to survive. )

He's ragged and worn, and the relative warmth of the caverns heated by bodies and torchlight burns his twisted leg. Stabbing pain being all he feels as sensation begins to return to it. He tried so desperately to keep his knee bent, to keep his foot from rubbing across the stone floor, but he quickly gave up, allowing his foot to limply drag across the ground.

And yet, he doesn't want to wallow and mope in his misery — as exhausted as he is, he's safe. He's warm. He'll have a hot meal and fresh blood and the best medical attention a bunch of men from the 1650's can offer. He can allow himself to relax, for he knows that should he exhaust himself here, he'll eventually wake up.

( Despite Kurda's insistence on catching up later, Gavner doesn't seem the harm in a bit of smalltalk now, to kill the time as he limps his way to the medical hall. )

"...You manage get to council in one piece?"

My original post for today was going to be an extremely in-depth analysis of Gavner and some albums that I associate with him, but that text is open on Tumblr on my laptop and my wi-fi connection on there is just... not having it today.

So tonight I get to talk about... ~Kurda Smahlt~ AKA Gav's BESTIE in these books. My partner writes a Kurda over at @thricemarked :) that there is Gav's Kurda :) please go say hi to him

Kurda is one of Gavner's close friends — if not, Gavner's closest friend. They've known each other for a good 40+ years. They're besties. They're bros, perhaps.

Kurda is one of very few vampires who knows basically everything about Gavner ; from Gavner's history with Larten, to the fact that Darren is Gavner's brother.

Kurda is a few decades older than Gav, but hasn't aged quite as roughly as Gavner has — stick the two of them into a group of humans, and chances are people will point to Gavner as being the older one.

Kurda is a bit of a controversial figure in the clan due to his strong anti-war views, along with his distaste for the violence and bloodsports that many clan members — Gavner included! — revel in. Gavner does tease Kurda about his pacifist nature — imagine being a vampire and hating the sight of blood! — but it's all in good fun.

While Gavner has always pushed against the clan's desire for war with the vampaneze, many of his opinions on the opposite clan of nightwalkers have been influenced by Kurda.

One of Kurda's hobbies is mapmaking, and Gavner has taken a crack at it himself only once after encouragement from Kurda — he gave up after maybe five minutes.

To be completely honest, Kurda and Gavner together hold 2/3rds of the clans brain cells. (Arra is the 3rd brain cell.)

They are basically your standard 'nerd/jock' duo in these books ♡ good for them honestly

Also I'm not gonna lie I do find it both funny and sad that Kurda is basically the 2nd or 3rd most popular character in this series after Larten and Darren, and Gav — Kurda's best friend, who's with Kurda in like half of his appearances — is basically forgotten about. Like hello??? Kurda did not drag Gavner out mapmaking for you to forget that he exists.

And there, they rest.

A pair of fools — their eyes turned to the stars, backs against the grass. There was silence, broken only be the chirps of grasshoppers, the rustles of the wind against the grass blades they laid in.

It's peaceful, and to Gavner, that peace is both welcome — and unsettling.

"Kurda."

His voice is soft, quiet — words spoken in a near-murmur.

"I gotta know..."

( Oh, how he had repeated that declaration in his mind over and over. As he sat silently in the Hall of Princes that night, unseen and unheard, his ears rang when those words were spoken. How horrid, the life that destiny had set out for them. )

He pulled his gaze from the stars and towards his fellow vampire.

( And he felt his chest tighten. You're far too forgiving, Gavner Purl. )

"Was it worth it?"
