Some Time in the Past
Downstairs, in a musty, yet welcoming basement adorned modestly by broken linoleum faux brick tile floors, and white spiky plastered walls, I sat on a beige sofa next to my younger sister and our best friend playing video games. It was Super Mario Bros. Strangely enough, I didn’t like to actually play the game using the controller, but I’d eagerly watch and cheer as my sister and our best friend would take turns as Mario or Luigi, fighting the Koopa Troopas through each level, and eventually facing Bowser in the final castle, in order to save the Princess. As an eight-year-old, I loved that game. Outside of our musty basement, we would turn our backyard into an obstacle course. The ground became lava, and the only things we could step on or touch were the furniture, the fence, and any stone path surfaces. Outside, we also played a game of tag called, “Colored Eggs.” The object of the game was to guess the color of the eggs the team on base agreed upon, then catch one of the team members once the color was guessed correctly. As you might imagine, this game was stretched so much because the “committee” who chose the color, could get really creative with the color name, and it would sometimes take forever to start the actual chase of tag.
