Haymitch and Katniss and Lenore Dove (SOTR spoilers)
Just had another realisation about how much Haymitch and Katniss are on the same wavelength.
Lenore Dove's dying wish was for Haymitch to make sure there's never another sunrise on a Reaping.
Haymitch keeps himself together just enough to spend the next 25 years meticulously plotting a rebellion that'll work, with Plutarch and Beetee being his main co-conspirators until Plutarch brings District 13 into the mix.
The war is bloody, and it's final moments cost the lives of countless innocent children, something that must affect Haymitch deeply.
The Snow regime falls, and the rebel alliance holds the balance of power.
Then Coin makes herself "interim" President. Haymitch see through this, and he doesn't like it.
And then Coin decides she wants to kill more children by having another Hunger Games. Despite everything Haymitch has ever done, his actions have helped lead to the deaths of innumerable innocents... and the sun might yet rise on another reaping.
Peeta, Annie and Beetee, with their humanity still intact vote no. Johanna who's probably the most damaged of the survivors votes yes, as does Enobaria.
That leaves Haymitch and Katniss, but Haymitch keeps a close eye on Katniss throughout the meeting, and sees the hatred for Coin in her eyes.
So when Katniss agrees to the Capitol Hunger Games, Haymitch assumes correctly that she has an ulterior motive.
But Coin has sprung this meeting on the Victors, they've had no chance to discuss anything beforehand, so Haymitch can't know for certain that Katniss hasn't just snapped following Prim's death.
But Haymitch trusts Katniss so much to have a plan, to not just want to murder children, that he casts the deciding vote for the Capitol Hunger Games,
Haymitch votes for sunrise over another Reaping
He risks everything he's worked for since Lenore Dove's death on a hunch, but it's ultimately the right choice. If he hadn't it's unlikely Katniss or anyone else would ever have had another chance to assassinate Coin.
What a leap of faith.
