Our first Rehearsal (Without Actors) and Lighting Tests

Our first rehearsal was done by our group members to figure out what filming styles would and would not work for our film. We filmed the entire film in one day and edited the shots to put together a rough example of what we were going for. 

We started the rehearsal shooting early in the morning at the indoor location. After making some camera adjustments we found that the natural lighting coming through the windows was perfect for the morning scene (provided the good weather holds up for the next rehearsal shooting). After filming this first scene, we went down to Gastown and Granville street (downtown Vancouver) to shoot all the outdoor scenes. This took the majority of the early afternoon to early night as the complexity of the outdoor scenes were complex. We were initially planning to shoot all the outdoor parts in Gastown because the ambience was the most suitable for the subject of our film. However, we found that there were not enough people walking around that area, which we needed for our crossroads scene. In the end we decided upon the busy intersection at Granville and Georgia. This was so that the loneliness and of the character was apparent as she stays at the same intersection for hours on end, without moving or talking to anyone. This scene was also important because it shows the audience their first, clear hint that something is not right with the main character. We had our group member stand at the street corner for 10-15 minutes without moving and did a timelapse later on (during the editing). 

We then got back to the indoor location and started trying different lighting setups. We had particular difficulty making sure there was no reflection in the windows while maintaining the perfect balance of highlights and shadows that we wanted.
