Do we think they were actually setting up Ray and Maggie to be like "if she wasn't killed they would've ended up together" in Thunderheart?

I’m so sorry it took so long to get this written! I hope I did an okay job with it I kinda took the idea and ran with it. this was proof read by me but there may be a mistake or two please ignore it.
Warnings: movie typical violence. But nothing else.
1980.
The hot afternoon sun was burning bright in the sky.
You were in South Dakota for a mental reset, a change from your time in Washington DC. Which was as boring as life could get.
Having grown up in the area as a child you spent a lot of time with your friend Maggie Eagle Bear who lived on the Reservation.
It felt like a second home.
Something about the place was captivating.
It felt real.
You loved the way you could stand outside at night and not hear a single sound besides the wind and an occasional car.
Earlier that day you were visiting Maggie and her family.
As you drove back from her place you couldn’t help but imagine what it would be like to live here permanently but it wasn't perfect it had its downsides.
The biggest was that the water was unsanitary for human contact let alone to consume so you bought a lot of water.
And the recent uptick violence which was further fueled by the recent increase of FBI activity.
You didn’t mean to stand outside and watch them but there was nothing good on tv and you were bored.
The two who were standing in the parking lot having a conversation were both handsome but the younger man was way more handsome in your opinion.
They turned their attention to you and the older man waved politely but your shyness got the better of you and you ran into your room with the door shut and double locked for the rest of the evening until your thoughts kept you awake.
That was the perfect first impression! He probably thinks you’re hiding something.
Why would he want anything to do with you?
You hardly look like his type anyway.
You didn’t even acknowledge his existence.
And to make matters worse you’re talking to yourself.
You sigh in frustration as you sit up in your bed and rub your hands over your tired face.
You decided that water wasn’t cutting it so you wanted a soda from the vending machine not far from your room.
You emptied your purse out on the small table by the front door and gathered up the $1.50 your midnight snack and drink would cost and made your way outside.
It felt good to get some fresh air.
It was hot but with the wind it wasn’t too bad.
You paused to look at the full moon in the sky. It was different from all the lights of the city.
It was the only light for miles besides the neon sign above your motel.
And the glowing bug zapper that was hanging outside the office door which made a low humming sound when it was resting from catching the pests.
You run your hand over the faded painted wall beside you and you couldn’t help but wonder what the motel was like when it was first built in the fifties when the paint was still wet and what the light blue sign that was so faded now that you could hardly read it and the pink neon sign was just turned on for the first time.
Did people vacation here?
Families?
Was it a place of refuge from the sun on the side of the road?
What was it like back before the plastic fantastic craze of the years prior took over and the ever present credit cards and yuppie guys and overly made up women of now took over?
It was so easy to get lost in your thoughts that you were so preoccupied with your surroundings that you hadn’t noticed that someone was standing by you until they cleared their throat.
Which made you jump out of your skin and your money fly out of your hand.
“Sorry, I didn’t mean to scare you.” The voice said
You looked at the person beside you and you could feel the blood rushing to your cheeks.
It was the FBI agent from before.
The very handsome one which was an understatement to how handsome he was up close.
“N-No, it’s okay I should have been paying more attention to the world around me.” You mumble politely trying not to let him see that you were blushing as you walk off the cement sidewalk and onto the dirt pavement in a desperate attempt to relocate your money.
“Did you lose something?” he asked you, stepping off the pavement and onto the dirt beside you.
“Oh uh yes, when you scared me I dropped my money and I’m hoping that the wind didn’t take off with it.” You said as you combed a few feet in front of you in failed attempts to recover your money.
“Why were you standing outside with money?” He asked you with slight hesitation and a bit of arrogance which made his attractiveness get knocked down a peg or two.
“Uh,to get a soda from the vending machine?” You said suddenly feeling three feet tall you weren’t great with being put on the spot.
“It’s not safe to be outside at night.” He said as he followed you.
Just as you were about to leave and return to your room empty handed and embarrassed a man motorcycle drove into the parking lot.
You recognized the man immediately; it was Walter Crow Horse, a tribal police officer who was kind enough to give you directions when you got completely lost on your drive back earlier in the day.
It was nice to see him again.
“Y/N L/N, this is twice we’ve met in one day You’re not secretly a trouble maker are you?” He asked but there wasn’t any bite to his bark; it was more playful than serious.
You shook your head.
“No sir, just looking for a lost $1.50.”
Walter turned his attention to the FBI agent.
“Levoi,You wear Loafers like that and you can give a woman a dollar?”
“No, the day of chivalry died with the buffalo.”
Walter just smiled at him.
“And whose fault was that because if my history book is correct it wasn’t someone who looked like me but they sure as hell looked like you didn’t they?”
You couldn’t hide the small laugh that escaped your lips.
“Didn’t you have somewhere else to be?” The FBI agent snaps at you and you immediately head back towards your room and lock the door.
You could hear Walter and the agent talking.
“See that’s the difference between you and me. Besides me being way better looking even on my worst day Is that If I see a beautiful woman outside bathed in moonlight I usually talk to her, but you Levoi? Nah, who has time for a beautiful woman?” Walter asked as he walked back to his motorcycle and flipped the FBI agent off.
You wanted to laugh but your feelings were a bit hurt by the FBI agent.
You quickly fell back asleep.
The next morning you woke up early as you always did.
You took a very quick shower and got dressed.
Maybe I can get a soda this time. You think as you go to step outside when you see something on the ground in front of your feet.
A six pack of Coca Cola on top of the cans was a post it note.
“Sorry.” -Ray
And under the post it was your missing $1.50.
You put the sodas into your car and drove back to meet up with Maggie again.
But you didn’t see her there.
You got out of your car and started walking towards the house because Grandma was usually outside tending to her garden and you loved to walk around in it with her. The language barrier didn’t seem to matter in the garden.
As you were walking you heard someone calling for her.
And then you saw the FBI agent from last night chasing her!
“What the hell are you doing!?” You said as you started chasing him.
He stopped but you didn't, which caused you to fall over your feet.
He immediately rushed to your side.
“Are You alright?” He asked worriedly as he put his gun away.
You quickly got to your feet despite the ache in your ankle.
“I’m fine but why were you chasing her?” You asked him
Ray quickly explained why and you laughed.
“Ray she's an old lady who is probably terrified of you now she doesn’t speak English either.”
Ray’s eye drifted from yours.
“Oh.” Was all he said
You chuckled.
“Thank you for the note.”
He smiled a boyish smile.
That’s when Maggie’s truck pulled up and she rightfully panicked.
You quickly stepped up to help.
“Maggie she’s fine she just got a bit spooked when I walked up.” You tell her Hoping to get a bit of heat off of Ray but she looks at Ray.
“And you are?” Maggie asked Ray.
“I’m Ray Lavoi, I'm an FBI agent. I wanted to ask her some questions.”
You were helping Maggie’s kids out of her truck and helping yellow hawk into his wheelchair.
You didn’t exactly like him but your opinion fell on deaf ears.
After you were done helping the family you stood next to Ray on the porch and Ray was immediately asked to leave after insulting Maggie’s grandmother.
Instead of staying, you followed Ray.
“You’re a jackass.” You tell him honestly
“A man is dead, the murder took place here.” Ray said plainly
“What were you looking for anyway?” You asked him
“Evidence.”
“Like bullet casings?”
“Yeah exactly.” He said almost annoyed
“Follow me.” You tell him
You drag him to your car by his arm,
“I was going to turn these over to Walter but since I owe you one so consider this a thank you.” You said as you handed him a plastic bag with bullet casings in it.
But when Ray went to grab them you pulled back. “Hold on, first things first try actually acting like a decent person next time you want to ask Maggie and grandmother questions.”
You handed him the bullets.
“Where did you find these?” He asked you.
“By the river I was gathering rocks with Maggie’s son.” You said plainly as you got in your car.
“ Thank you.” He said as you drove off
You went back to the motel and put ice on your wrist which was hurting now that the adrenaline was wearing off. You called Maggie and apologized for leaving so early and promised to come back later on in the week.
You decide to go to the diner/bar across the street from your motel out of boredom.
And of course as soon as you sat down Ray and the other Agent sat down in the booth across from you.
You listened into their conversation.
You immediately came to the conclusion that you hated the other agent.
You against your better judgment stood up and walked over to them.
“Good evening Ray.” You said and Ray looked up at you with a soft smile. “Hello Y/N.”
The other agent looked at you like you were scum of the earth.
“We have important business to discuss. Ray, you can chase tail later.” He said as he dismissed you with his hand.
You weren’t in the mood to argue with a man who had a gun so you went back to your booth.
You liked the bar which is what it was more so of than a diner once you were inside.
It felt like something from a movie.
But the small amount of peace was interrupted by a molotov cocktail being thrown into the bar and someone firing a gun.
Which caused a huge amount of panic and confusion.
You went outside and ran.
You tripped over your feet and landed on the ground.
“Y/N, are you okay?” Ray asked, offering to help you up.
You nodded embarrassed.
“Y-yeah I’m fine.” You said trying to avoid his gaze “but do you mind walking me to my room?”
You were expecting him to say no but he walked with you.
“Thank you.” You said softly as you walked across the parking lot.
“It’s my job to protect people.”
You chuckled.
“By lying on government documents?” You said
“You heard that didn’t you?” Ray said with a small sigh.
“Hard not too with Mr.dog soup talking so loud you seriously might want to change partners.”
Ray chuckled as he walked you to your room. “He’s not so bad when you get to know him.”
“I’d rather not thank you. But seriously, thank you for walking me to my room.” You say as you rub at your sore wrist.
“Sure, anytime. I mean.. not like that but if you need me you know where I am.” Ray rambled
“Got it. Goodnight Ray.”
“Goodnight Y/N.”
The next morning as you were waking outside just enjoying the sunshine you saw a cop car pull up beside you . It was Walter who was following you as you walked.
“Y/n,L/n you’re under arrest.”
You looked at him. “On what grounds?”
“Walking on the side of the road.”
You looked at him.
“That’s not a crime Walt.” You said as you kept walking.
“Tampering with evidence is.” He said and you stopped.
“I didn’t tamper. I found the casings on Maggie’s property and I turned them over to the Feds as I am supposed to do.”
Walter laughed.
“Uh huh and Mr.Tall thin and pilaf had nothing to do with it?”
You could feel the blood rushing to your face.
“He does not.” You say as you walk to your car.
Walter followed you.
“I have no idea what you have to do with any of this but Grandpa wants to talk to you.”
You hadn’t seen him in years. He was just the nice old guy who when you and Maggie were younger always told stories too.
“He’s still alive?”
“And kicking c’mon I’ll drive you.” Walter said as he opened the passenger door for you politely.
You took a seat in the passenger seat.
The drive was quiet until he pulled over someone.
You waited patiently until Walter came back.
“Who was that?” You asked him.
“Your boyfriend.” Walter said with a laugh
“He’s not my boyfriend and why did you pull him over?”
“He was going 59 in a 55.”
“I didn’t see anything on your radar?” You asked looking over at the dash.
“I don't need no radar, I can tell! I just listened to the wind; it said, "Fifty-nine, nail 'im!" Walter said with a laugh. “And on more important matters Grandpa wanted to talk to him too.”
As Walter drove up to Grandpa's home the memories of your childhood came rushing back.
It felt like yesterday and a million years ago all at once.
You got out of the car first.
Ray immediately noticed you.
“Y/N. Why are you here?” He asked but Walter interrupted
“She's visiting a family friend.”
You took the cigarettes from Walter.
“It’s rude to keep an elder waiting.” You said as you walked in front of them.
You could hear his tv.
You chuckled.
“You finally spring for cable?” You teased him and he laughed.
And said something in a language you didn’t know.
“He said that if you were going to be staying you could help cover the cost.” Walter said as he stood.
“Sorry grandpa maybe next time.” You said
He looked at Ray and said something else.
“What?” Ray asked
“It’s rude to visit an elder without bringing some tobacco.” Walter said and Ray looked at you but more so the cigarettes in your hand.
“Please.” He asked you and you sighed and handed the cigarettes to him.
Grandpa said something and Walter laughed.
“He likes your necklace.” Walter said to you and you gave it to Grandpa who gave you a small sachet of willow bark in return and said something in the tone he always did when he talked to you.
“He says you are at a crossroads. The willow bark is for your wrist, chew on it and you will feel better physically but you will never mentally feel better until you go down the path you know is right.” Walter said translating for Grandpa
“Excuse me I hate to break up the swap meet but I have important work to do.” Ray said with an impatient sigh.
You left and let them talk.
You took a seat outside just as you used to as a kid.
But you knew that a blue car wasn’t going to be coming to take you away from the only home you had for years this time.
You could stay if you wanted but you had to question should you?
Was that what grandpa meant?
Ray and Walter walked out of the house and Grandpa had on Ray's sunglasses.
You laughed.
“Looking good.” You said with a laugh.
The three of you went your separate ways.
You went to Maggie’s house.
You and her were talking about anything and everything.
The kids were playing on the floor.
It reminded you of your own childhood.
There was a knock on the door.
You volunteered to answer it.
It was Ray who had a box of groceries in his hands.
“Hey Y/N, I came to talk to Grandma.”
You let him in.
“Maggie Ray wants to talk with Grandma and I know she’s been asking for him—.” You start to say.
“No Y/n, she’s scared of the FBI.” Maggie said
“He’s not going to do anything stupid are you Rat-I mean Ray?” You said as you took the Box from him and set it on the table.
“Very funny Y/N and I promise I just want to talk.” Ray said and he sounded honest.
Ray and Maggie and Grandma talked but you couldn’t shake the feeling of something bad was about to happen.
It was something you suffered with since childhood that you had a sixth sense of things that hadn’t happened yet.
You always talked to Grandpa about it. He always said something in a language you didn’t understand which you didn’t mind at the time. It just felt nice to talk to someone about it.
Your thoughts were interrupted by the sound of a truck pulling up and Ray tackling you to the ground.
“What do you think you’re doing?! Get off me!” You said confused
But It took minutes for you to be proven right when gunshots rang through the house the sound of Maggie’s children screaming would probably be in your nightmares for as long as you lived.
Maggie was telling them to get down; everything felt like it was happening in rapid succession.
But children don’t always understand the danger they are in and Maggie’s son ended up getting shot in the arm.
You were beside him before Ray or Maggie could be.
You had medical training from your job in Washington DC. You were able to make a tourniquet out of your belt which you were thankful you decided to wear today.
Maggie was beside you sobbing over her son who was sobbing as well.
Maggie easily lifted the boy and the three of you rushed to the car.
You knew exactly where the clinic was.
You will never forget it.
You beat Ray to the driver's seat.
“I know where the clinic is and I drive with a lead foot.” You rambled as you drove
Maggie was sobbing holding her son .
“Stay awake.” She told him softly sobbing
Ray was talking to someone on his two way radio.
“Reporting a shooting at Eagle Bear residence—.” Ray said as he kept an eye on Maggie but you took the Radio from him.
“The only victim is a Six year old with a GSW injury who is headed to the only clinic within our twenty this Y/N L/N yes that one Requesting all available backup. suspects are probably going to leg bail over.” You said with a bit more urgency than you would have normally.
Ray looked at you but didn’t say anything.
You quickly got Maggie and her son inside the clinic.
You were watching outside from the window.
You knew you would have to explain what happened in the car to Ray but not now.
The men who shot Maggie’s son were circling the parking lot.
You followed Ray and it was harder to tell who was more upset about the situation.
You stormed up to the men who all made a comment or two about your appearance.
You smiled and then punched one of them in the face.
You couldn’t even think of anything to say.
You didn’t feel like you were in your own body.
You felt like you were carrying a burden from the past.
A crying child.
Gunshots.
Cops leaving and doing nothing.
Strangers.
Each memory was a different hit to the guy's face.
You hadn’t even noticed that you were sobbing as you handcuffed the guy beating Ray to it.
The loud horn of a car shook you back to your senses.
It was the agent from before.
“Were you hit?” He asked Ray
“No.” Ray said
“Y/N?” The agent said and you were starting to regret that APB you put out.
“As I live and breathe.” He said and it took everything in your power not to punch him.
“Keep talking and I’ll stop that for you.”
“She's the one who put out the APB Frank. I don't know why.” Ray said, sounding just as confused as he looked but he also looked concerned.
“Well it’s been a couple of years but Y/N,was one of the—.” Frank started to say but was cut off by the Sheriff pulling up.
The two quickly got to talking as you walked towards anywhere that wasn’t the clinic.
“Y/N, stop.” Ray said, calling out for you but you ignored him as your walk turned into a run.
You ran as far as your legs would take you until you collapsed on the ground.
The world went dark.
You didn’t know how long you were out there but you only knew that you moved because someone was carrying you.
Aren’t I too heavy?
You knew you weren’t exactly light.
It was the butt of many jokes about you and you hated it but you liked the way you looked.
You were starting to stir awake.
You noticed you were in the back seat of Walter’s police car.
You quickly pretended to be asleep.
But you heard Ray’s voice.
“Oh thank god is she alright?” He said and you felt a warm hand on your face and you could tell it was Ray by his cologne.
It was sharp and woodsy.
“Found her around grandpa’s house. She seems okay.” Walter said
“Why was she out there?” Ray asked him
Walter didn’t say anything.
And you woke up that morning to Ray knocking on your door.
“CrowHorse wants to talk with me but I don’t want to go alone. Will you come with me?” He asked
You were nervous but you went with him anyway.
A powwow.
You hadn’t been to one in years.
Walter and Ray talked about the homicide but you made a beeline for Maggie who hugged you.
“Thank you Y/N.” She said
“Anytime I’m just glad he’s okay.” You said but you couldn’t help but notice Yellow Hawk eying you.
It was almost enough to make you feel nauseous.
“Hey.” He said said
“Hello.” You said trying to remain friendly.
“You're the one who attacked that guy who shot Maggie’s kid aren’t you?”
“Th-that’s me.” You said nervously as you tried to focus on the horizon.
But you secretly were putting two and two together.
“You know I think I heard Grandpa calling me bye.” You said in a quick hurry.
You walked up to Ray.
“I need to talk to you now.” You tell him as you drag him over to the side.
“I know who did it.” You tell him point blank
“What do you mean?”
You explained everything to Ray that you knew about and you knew Yellow Hawk.
And things started to make even more sense.
The water contamination.
The murder.
“How do you know for sure?” Ray asked
“Because I worked on this case long before they called you, Ray, trust me on this one please.” You said keeping your eyes on yellow Hawk.
“What do you mean you worked on it?” Ray asked
You sighed and handed him your badge. “Agent L/N.”
Ray looked at you like you just turned your head a full 360.
“Tell me everything you know.”
And you did.
And he told you everything he knew which was wrong.
But neither of you had a chance to talk because Grandpa wanted to talk to both of you later tonight.
“Well until then I don’t think we should be separated.” Ray said to you as you both walked to his truck.
You weren’t expecting to see a dog in the passenger seat.
“Didn’t know you had a pet.”
“I fed him and now he won’t leave.”
You chuckled and pet the dog on the head.
“Does he have a name?”
“Oh I've been calling him Jimmy.” Ray said
“After Jimmy looks twice?” You said with a small laugh.
“Maggie said he was a shape shifter.”
You joined the duo as Ray drove.
“Why didn’t you tell me you were an agent?” Ray asked
“Because I am going to lose that job Ray.” You said as you were looking out the window.
“Why?”
“Long story but to shorten it, uranium water. ”
“What?”
“Yeah..have you ever thought about why the water is brown here?”
“Something is rotten here Ray and it’s not just the water.”
The rest of the drive was quiet.
You and Ray both sat side by side as you waited for Grandpa to talk.
Ray sat comfortably close to you
“You seem comfortable here.” Ray said
You nodded.
“Yeah my dad was full blooded. I lived here as a kid but when he was killed by a cop I threw myself into solving the reason why.”
“Did you ever figure it out?” Ray asked softly
“No they won’t tell me anything but I have a sneaking suspicion it involved the sheriff." You said sadly
“I’ll help in any way I can.”
You smiled and nodded as Grandpa started speaking about a man named Thunderheart.
And something he said had an effect on Ray and Walter took off after him.
Grandpa looked at you.
“Have you figured out what path to take?” He asked you in English which would be a sign he was mad but it was the opposite. “Will you follow thunderheart?”
“I want to. But what if it ends in flames?”
“You need to come watch TV.” He said as he patted you on the shoulder and stood up to scold Ray and Walter.
The days that followed were some of the most stressful and emotionally devastating.
Yellow Hawk was dead before you or Ray could do anything.
You panicked and ran to Grandpa to find Jimmy Looks twice inside the house with him.
“Hey, Y/N. Long time no see.” He said to you kindly
“I wish things were different Jimmy.”
Jimmy laughed.
“I don’t because this had to happen Y/N. Don’t worry about me.”
As soon as the words left his mouth federal agents stormed the house.
You tried your best to protect Grandpa.
But they just turned their aggression on you.
Ray showed up an hour later looking devastated at the scene in front of him everything was destroyed and the Turtle shell Grandpa had was over two hundred years old was stomped on the ground.
“Oh Jesus Christ I’m sorry.” Ray said, looking around the destruction around him.
Walter showed up and told you to get to Red Deer Table and haul ass.
Both you and Ray hurried to his truck.
Ray and you had grown closer over the last few days.
It was easy with Ray; you didn’t have to be someone else.
Not an agent, you were just Y/N.
Ray could tell you were upset and he put his hand over yours.
“It’s going to be okay.”
Oh how you wish he were right.
But you knew that feeling deep in your chest.
Something had happened.
You and Ray and Walter met up at the top of Red deer table.
One thing you never want to see at night is coyotes circling around somewhere.
You’ve been on the job long enough to know that they were guarding food.
The thought of what that food made out of your skin crawl.
You felt your heart drop to your feet when you spotted the body that was partially buried face down.
It was Maggie.
You immediately gasped in horror and started sobbing.
Ray was beside you whispering comfort the best he could.
But everything seemed to click into place.
You didn’t have time to mourn your friend.
The next day you and Ray and Walter got to work.
And after what would be the car chases to end all car chases.
You were surrounded by cops.
Ray stood by you and held your hand.
Frank looked at the both of you.
“Looks like agent Y/N, is just as stupid as her daddy. Did she tell you what happened Ray?He was trying to help the reservation but he got radicalized by stories and thought of himself as a warrior and got himself killed while hiking up here.” Frank said
You were insulted but Ray spoke before you.
“That’s a Fucking lie he saw what you were doing and you shot him and left him for dead!”
Frank laughed.
“Touché didn’t mean to offend.”
Frank continued on until Ray played a tape recording of Frank admitting to everything.
And Ray told everyone the truth.
About the water and the corruption and about Maggie and Richard.
And ARM showed up fully to protect You and Ray and Walter in full force.
The days felt like years that followed.
Frank was arrested and was headed back to Washington DC.
You left your job in Washington.
As did Ray.
It was just too much.
You were outside Grandpa’s when you saw Ray pull up.
“I’ve made my decision.” You tell grandpa as you stand up.
“I’m staying here, it is my home.”
“And Thunderheart?”
You smiled and looked at Ray.
“He’s staying too.”
“Good he owes me a new TV.”
Ray laughed as he walked over to you and wrapped his arm around you.
“What are you telling him about me?”
“Only the good things.” You said as you kissed his cheek.
“Oh, just get married already.” Walter teased
“That’s not a bad idea.”
-The end-
Thunderheart (1992)
