Every summer since she lived at the states, she would go back to Japan for summer vacation. It first happened when she was six years old. Her eldest brother was beginning high school the same time she was starting elementary. The way he became so passive aggressive the rest of the summer didn't seem peculiar to Gabby. They were all like that, something their mother pointed out, all four of them. They got it from you, her mother would often chime over dinner when one of the boys would become enthusiastic about something they'd usually turn down. She learned the said inherited trait earlier than most of her brothers though. And even if it got her parents off her hair for the time being, it became somewhat of a burden. All the bad things and the feelings she couldn't deliver properly lodged itself inside her, making her feel out of this world, foreign at best.
But Alex seemed to have a different outlook about moving to South Korea for high school. It didn't feel forced or passive aggressive, he just seemed to really look forward to go there. He packed weeks ahead, went out with his friends and spent most of his time bugging the hell out everyone, boasting how it would be the best time of his life. Only the night before did she really figure out why. He said he was running away in ways that no one would really understand. He will be in Jeguk, but he will be elsewhere. I'm gonna slip between the cracks, Gabs, he whispered, ruffling her hair as he passes the bag of chips over to her. And they won't even know... Her legs dangled at the edge of his bed as she watched him zip his luggage, looking up at her and winking like how Peter Pan would have. She couldn't quite put her finger on it, but she got the feeling that Alex would be having the best times of his life from the way he smiled. If she only knew how South Korea, or should she say the runaway bride, would destroy her brother, she'd have wished he had passive aggressive instead.
"Takahashi is coming, right?" Gabby nodded her, dunking her head inside the bag and popping a mouthful of potato chips in her mouth. 'With Aiko, yup." She adds cheerfully. A few minutes later, they were informed of the guests arrival and she set the snack aside and got on her feet, running pass her brother. More than anything, she looked forward to getting in touch with her friends in Japan. The childhood friends she doesn't during the school year being half way across the world. She pushed the house help aside and opened the door herself. Beaming a smile, she bowed to the young man towering over them who bowed before making his way in with her brother. Takahashi, Uehera, that's how they called each other. She turned to the older girl and waved her hands before tugging on her arm and pulling her inside, tracing their older brothers' footsteps. "Alex leaves the day after tomorrow, you know?"
