on Thyl:
she’s been standing out on the curb, scuffing the ground and doing the one-arm-behind-the-head stretch, long swinging movements, loose-jointed girl. she looks up and there’s her lover, her girl-not-Maggie, someone she’s cried laughing with in the early hours of the morning. and Thyl stops fidgeting, she looks at this girl with all her heart in her serious eyes, and the girl saunters over to her, smiling, and stands, chin tilted up to Thyl. they raise their eyebrows at each other and the girl giggles and Thyl smiles with one side of her mouth. they get on the stupid electric bike and whir away to get smoothies.
Thyl’s had her degree in Therapeutic Medicine for about three years now. she works barista and dock jobs and doesn’t seem bothered that she could have more than her drafty flat with the leaky taps and loud neighbours.
when Thyl meets Maggie, she’s in the perfect place to get involved with somebody: she’s been keeping to herself for a few months, she’s figured some stuff out about life, her jobs have been the same ones for at least a month each. when she sees Maggie she does a double take, her first thought is “oh no” and Maggie smiles sweet at her and she’s gone. instant crush on the bartender.
their relationship doesn’t fix. after the incident she hears about what happened from Maggie’s friends and feels horrendously guilty but guesses (correctly) that Maggie won’t want to talk it out with her, so she stays out of the way. until she doesn’t, and they hook up, and Thyl wakes up with Regrets and rinse, repeat because she’s got a shortcoming of applied principle when it comes to Maggie and on Maggie’s part, she’s convinced herself that this is the way to prove to Thyl that it wasn’t her fault and that they’re fine. at one point Maggie casts it up to her that Thyl’s not even trying to find other women and Thyl just. looks at her. and Maggie Starts To Get It.
her story, because it’s wrapped around the comic, is Maggie-centric. we don’t find out much about her in the story. but Thyl’s lived a full life before the events of the comic, and tbh she continues to do so after she and Maggie part ways. she lives in Cambodia for a few years. she gets her MD and works as a doctor. she travels a lot and gets nice and tanned and muscled and wears bandannas to keep her hair out of her face. she’s always Thyl, constantly half-wrapped up in books, living by her principles, introspective and pensive, quick to kindness.
she never does completely get over Maggie but it doesn’t matter because they don’t see each other much after that. she never marries. when she hears Maggie’s fostering kids she’s proud of her. one of the handful of books she’s written is dedicated “to Magpie” and Maggie has the book but hasn’t read it yet.
Amenophis: Thyl put salt in my coffee because I annoyed him but I'm going to continue to drink it because I'm petty and wont let him win.
