Ok, necron ramble time.

As I mentioned before, I am slightly obsessed with necrons and am currently rereading The Infinite and the Divine by Robert Rath for the umpteenth time. I noticed a thing that was staring me in the face in regards to the Song of Serenade. Putting it under a read more to avoid spoiling people. TLDR: I arrived at the obvious by taking the longest way round possible.

Throughout the book we see the pattern and pentatonic scale for the song of Serenade (3211 1545 4131 5322 on a loop). I tried decoding it by changing it to hex, binary, etc., but haven't found any decent text matches. After we put a name to the song, Trazyn mentions book cyphers: a way of communicating using numbers that refer to a book/text, which acts as the key (so, without saying the name/edition of the book, you could just reference a chapter, page, paragraph, word...).

I tried it with TIATD itself, but the author divided it in 4 acts only, so it was obvious it would not work, as we have a 5 in the song.

Then I took a look at some of the excerpts we have from the other books. We have pieces from Prophecies of Awlunica of Cepharil, Currents of Ruin, a quote from Humanity: A Tactical Treatise by Nemesor Iontekh, some quotes form ‘Boss Dok’ Bigsaw, an excerpt from They Drank the Seas: An Oral History of the Greenskin War, another from Nemesor Zandrekh's The Logic of Battle... and, crucially, several excerpts from The War in Heaven play, divided in acts and scenes.

Now, if we take the code and assume TWIH is the key, it should fit, as it has more than 5 acts that appear throughout the book. We exclude the character names, as plays are meant to be spoken out loud, and we have the following:

3211 -> Act 3, scene 2, line 1, word 1. Nephreth says "Do"

1545 -> Act 1, scene 5, line 5, word 5. Halios says "not"

4131 -> Act 4, scene 1, line 3, word 1. Nephreth says "Be"

5322 -> Act 5, scene 3, line 2, word 2. Llandu'gor says "deceived"

It's right there for us to find! I know Orikan says it straight in the book, but I found the fact that you can look for it on your own and all data is already there so neat. I need to check the translated versions to see if they kept the code working.

Anyway that was my ramble for today, sorry for the long post. I am so normal about this.
