Lyme Disease
Introduction
Lyme disease is an infectious illness caused by a bacterium called Borrelia burgdorferi, transmitted to humans through the bite of infected black-legged ticks (also known as deer ticks). It is particularly prevalent in certain areas of North America, Europe, and Asia. If left untreated, it can lead to serious complications affecting the joints, heart, and nervous system.
Causes of Infection
The primary cause of Lyme disease is a bite from a tick infected with Borrelia bacteria. These ticks are often very small — about the size of a poppy seed — so their bite can easily go unnoticed. The bacteria usually require the tick to remain attached to the skin for 36 to 48 hours to be transmitted.
Symptoms
Symptoms of Lyme disease typically appear in stages:
1. Early Stage (Days to weeks after the bite):
Signature sign: A circular rash known as erythema migrans, often resembling a “bull’s-eye.”
Fever and chills.
Headache.
Fatigue.
Muscle and joint aches.
Swollen lymph nodes.
2. Intermediate Stage (Weeks to months):
Severe joint pain, especially in the knees.
Neurological symptoms such as numbness or facial muscle weakness (Bell’s palsy).
Irregular heart rhythms.
Memory or concentration issues.
3. Late Stage (Months to years):
Chronic joint inflammation (Lyme arthritis).
Persistent neurological problems.
Rare cases of encephalitis or spinal cord inflammation.
Diagnosis
Diagnosis is based on clinical symptoms and medical history, including possible exposure to tick-infested areas. In early stages, lab tests may not always be conclusive. Blood tests (such as ELISA followed by Western blot) are used to confirm the diagnosis, especially in later stages.
Treatment
Antibiotics are the main treatment, including:
Doxycycline for adults and children over 8 years old.
Amoxicillin for pregnant women and younger children.
The treatment duration typically ranges from 10 to 21 days, depending on the disease stage.
Advanced cases may require intravenous antibiotics.
Prevention
Avoid walking in tall grass or wooded areas without protection.
Wear protective clothing and use insect repellent.
Perform thorough body checks after being outdoors in tick-prone areas.
Remove ticks as soon as possible using fine-tipped tweezers.
Conclusion
Lyme disease can be serious if not treated early, but it is usually curable with timely antibiotic therapy. Awareness, recognizing early symptoms, and preventing tick bites are essential to avoiding the disease.
Ladies, it’s important when you’re outside to check your self for ticks or tick bites. The tick bite does not cause pain or itch. So, ticks may not be noticed for a few days. After feeding on blood, ticks get quite swollen and easy to see. Ticks fall off on their own after sucking blood for 3 to 6 days. The wood tick (dog tick) is the size of a watermelon seed. Sometimes, it can pass on Rocky Mountain spotted fever or Colorado tick fever. The deer tick is between the size of a pinhead and an apple seed. Sometimes, it can pass on Lyme disease. We are giving away a few Tick Wranglers by UST®. It safely removes all sizes and types of ticks without having to touch the insect. Sturdy aluminum construction won't bend, rust, crack or break. Attendees can expect to receive more information like this and be given the opportunity to win a few prizes. #ticks #tickbite #lymedisease #lymediseaseawareness #campinggear #campingtrip #womenwhocamp #campinglife #womenoutdoors #camp #hiking #hikingtrails #womenhikers #womenwhoexplore #outdooradventures #travel #womentravel #outdoorliving #outdoorafro #outdoorlife #exploreoutdoors #beoutside #campingtools (at Morning Glory Homestead) https://www.instagram.com/p/CPmL_4NB49u/?utm_medium=tumblr

🎵🎶 "If you go down to the woods today......." I'm lucky enough to own a few acres of woodland next to my cottage, and regularly I'm in there with my chainsaw and axe, collecting firewood. Two days ago, the weather was good ( for the first time of the year) and I was in there in a short sleeved shirt.....bad decision ! For the second time in 3 years, I was bitten by a tick, a deer tick I think, although I only got a quick glimpse of it before I brushed it off my arm ...luckily before it had buried its way under my skin. With our changing climate, these horrible things are far more prevalent than in the past, and they can be lethal and cause Lyme disease !! Hopefully I'm OK and just subjected to a sore and swollen arm and a 3 week course of targeted antibiotics. In these times of local walks for exercise, I just want to warn people NOT TO TAKE RISKS. Wear long sleeves, long pants and tuck them into your socks if you're in this type of area. Wellies are best. The bacteria these creatures carry can cause horrific illness and permanent damage to muscles and the nervous system.....even paralysis. So, if you go down to the woods today...COVER UP. #tick #tickbite #lymedisease #deertick #woodland #woodlandwalks #lancashire #bolton #horwich #bitten #bacterialinfection #muscledamage #nervedamage #paralysis #staysafe (at Wallsuches) https://www.instagram.com/p/B-RqeRVl6Om/?igshid=x59r1nh73a8k
Good Morning!! I wanted to thank the over 500+ sets of eyes willing to partake in my journey with #lymewithsalt !!💚. . . For those who are new, my name is Esther and next Wednesday I’ll be 28. I’ve hated cooking and all things healthy until late June 2018 when I learned that a #tickbite from a hike at home the summer before forever changed my life. I laughed HYSTERICALLY when first told to follow a #glutensugardairyfreediet but ... on July 1, 2018 I started and tried harder than I thought possible. I guess the incessantly radiating joint pain, diminishing physical appearance, fatigue, alopecia, anxiety, depression, etc. were all louder than my heart’s love for gluten. . . #Lymedisease and its treatment are far from agreed upon by health professionals. To further complicate answers, Lyme manifests and continually morphs uniquely in each individual. Sometimes there are just no answers at all and for the weird dysfunctional version of Type A that I am - that’s a NIGHTMARE. Lack of answers requires patients to invest a lot of trust, faith and research🎲🎲. . . So, this dark ambiguity is why I am super passionate about providing a place that might be resourceful or inspirational for someone embarking on their Lyme or any other #healthjourney . When I first received my diagnosis, blogs and Instagram pages were so inspirational for me, who to be quite honest, barely wanted to try. . . But - HERE I AM!✨ Trying my best to kick Lyme’s relentless ass to the ground. Showcasing here what it looks like to TRY and start a new, healthier lifestyle despite #lyme and the years of poor health choices behind me. I am no expert, I am not a professional just a very loving, learning, mistake-making human trying to navigate the throws of her new #lifewithlyme . . . To me, what’s most beautiful here is the irony. Before Lyme, I was struggling HARD to feel fulfilled by my career and I still do certain days. Irony because having my health completely stolen from me, and feeling so utterly alone, lost, empty, battered and broken is exactly what EMPOWERED me to become (WIP) whole again. More whole than I was before Lyme. There truly is beauty in the breakdown. THANK YOU FOR SUPPORTING💚✨ (at Sunset Cliffs Natural Park) https://www.instagram.com/p/BrBEBH7nqVP/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1t9vuffosh06q
YOGA IS STRAIGHT MAGIC✨ Today I finally got back to my favorite hot hatha style yoga class. I began practicing yoga with @indieyogaoceanbeach a few months after beginning my career as an aspiring #CPA in Jan’ 16. I kept with it at various studios to mitigate the #ergonomical pain from #officelife and driving but it was a struggle for me to remain consistent. . . The only thing I was aware about my health post #tickbite but pre diagnosis was that whatever my body was trying to tell me every day - via stiffness, distractibility, anxiety, and mental fog or whatever it chose - it always seemed to get cured when I committed daily to either running or to yoga. Running is my favorite but my brain, stress levels, muscles & joints LOVE yoga way more. . . I am not an instinctively patient or a slow person which is why yoga is difficult for me to stick with. Another reason is that I am very unbalanced both figuratively and literally 🤣😏 so yoga forces me to be patient with myself too. I am a huge klutz and I always overdo everything, permanent hyper-speed everything. I haven’t been committed to my mat at all since my diagnosis because #lymediseasetreatment and managing it is a full-time job on top of my real one. . . I took this week off from work to regather myself and I am determined to recommit to myself and to my favorite ocean patterned #mandukayogamat for the amazing clarity and joint/muscle therapy.✨ #mindfulness #slowdown #hothathayoga #detox #sweatitout #turnoffthemind #bepresent #committoyourself #comittoyourmat #healthiswealth #onestepatatime #onedayatatime #patience #bekindtoyourself #lymewithsalt (at Indie Yoga) https://www.instagram.com/p/BpDfNS3HqTO/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=6gx1zp7y63y1
