Questions, Questions, Questions
“ Okay, class! Your cultural appreciation assessment is due in exactly one week! I expect nothing less than 2,000 words. Remember, these places can be fictional or real, just make sure you cite your sources! Any questions?”
Peter placed his head in his hands and tried to rub the exhaustion from his eyes. He had totally forgotten about this essay and honestly didn’t have many ideas on what to write for. Since this was Peter’s last class of the day, he walked back to the Avengers compound heavily thinking of an exciting topic for his essay.
***
Peter walked into the compound and went to the kitchen to grab a snack. He rummaged through the cupboards, looking for his precious pop tarts. Nobody else on the team seemed to enjoy them, except for Thor. Luckily, Thor and Loki seemed to travel a lot back and forth from Asgard to Earth, so Peter usually never ran into the problem of Thor stealing his treats.
Peter’s spider-sense started to prickle and he turned around just in time for Thor to grab him and give him a noogie. Thor’s booming laughter echoed throughout the kitchen as Peter tried to make his escape. Since he was the youngest member, the team also picked on him and treated him like a little brother. Peter never minded these acts, but he was still adjusting to it since he grew up without siblings.
“ Hello Spider kid! Looking for your prized pop tart treats? Well, I think I ate them all. But don’t worry! I have asked Stark to order some more!”
Peter finally escaped Thor’s grip and laughed. “ It’s alright Thor, I’m not upset. Why do you like them so much anyway? Don’t you have treats like that on Asgard?”
Thor gave Peter a confused look. “ Certainly not dear boy! We Asgardians don’t like to subject ourselves to that much sugar. How else do you think we stay so healthy?”
All of a sudden a lightbulb went off in Peter’s head. Asgardian culture would be the perfect topic for his essay, and he had two perfect people he could question. Although he wasn’t entirely sure if most of the world even knew about Asgard, Peter knew it would be a cool read. The only problem was like Peter didn’t want to annoy the two brothers. Reason number one was because Loki intimidated him, and Peter didn’t want to be on his bad side. Reason number two was he didn’t want to be embarrassed for choosing Asgard as his topic.
Peter decided the best course of action would be to secretly take notes and not tell the brothers until after his paper was completed. That way he could just act like he was curious and not researching them.
Peter then went to work. He started his research in the library because Tony was bound to have at least one book on Asgard in there.
Unfortunately, those books were only slightly helpful. Most of them weren’t even in English, and Google translate couldn’t even help. Defeated, Peter started to put the books away in their rightful spots. He had been so focused, he didn’t even realize a dark-haired demigod had snuck into the library.
“ Interested in Asgard are we boy?” A snide voice said from the shadows of the bookshelves. Peter dropped the remaining books in his hands as he scrambled to turn around. Loki had a novel in his hand and was walking toward Peter with a curious expression.
“ Oh uh hi Mr. Loki sir. I was uh just looking into these books for a uh school thing. Thor had mentioned that you don’t eat lots of sugar in Asgard so I was just seeing what snacks you eat instead.” Peter stammered out the white lie. He was telling the truth, it was for a school project and he was curious about what Asgardians eat on a typical day. He just left out the part where he was researching Asgard for a project.
Loki could tell Peter was hiding something but didn’t push it. He didn’t really care if an earthling was interested in his home, he just wanted to get back to reading. “ Well, feel free to ask Thor and me any questions you please. We would be more than happy to clear up any questions your little mortal heart desires. Just be mindful, I do get annoyed easily and then I won’t be too happy. Deal?”
Peter let out a little sigh of relief knowing that the Gods were okay with questions.
“ Thank you, Mr. Loki! I promise I won’t annoy you! Do you have time for one question? These books weren’t very helpful.”
Loki pondered the kids' request. “ Oh I suppose. But make it quick, I was rather enjoying my novel before I was interrupted”.
Peter excitedly grabbed his notebook and pen. “ So, because you don’t eat lots of sugar and processed foods, what sort of stuff do you eat in Asgard?”
Loki chuckled at the silly question but answered anyway. “ Well, we have lots of fruits and fresh cheese. I myself enjoy grapes and almonds for my snacks. For meals, we usually have wild boar or beef along with potatoes, bread, and a variety of vegetables. All freshly made of course. Does that fulfill your curiosity?”
Peter nodded vigorously and finalized his notes. He quickly thanked Loki and went off on his way.
Over the course of the next few days, Peter’s paper was almost completed. He may have gone a bit overboard with his questions, but in his opinion, it had paid off. He hoped he hadn’t annoyed the brothers too much, but it was interesting learning about a city on a completely different planet. So far this is what he had found out about Asgard:
Their weapons may appear to be melee, but in fact, are more advanced in technology than Earth. They use Swords, Axes, Shields, Daggers (Lokis's favorite) and some use magic.
Travel is done almost solely by the Bifrost. Asgardians pride themselves on not using spaceships and cars as other planets do. The Bifrost is connected to “ The rainbow bridge” ( Peter nearly got smacked for trying to compare that to the Mario Kart track)
Asgardians can live for about 5,000 years. ( Peter didn’t dare ask how old the brothers were)
This information was more than helpful for Peter. He checked his notes and saw that he only had one more question to ask the brothers. He just needed to figure out what kinds of hobbies and sports Asgardians liked to do. Peter doubted they played football or baseball but figured they must have something similar.
Peter meandered the halls looking for one of the Asgardians. The compound was pretty quiet today. Bucky and Steve had gone golfing, Vision and Wanda went to see a movie, and Tony was tinkering in the lab like usual. The remaining team members were probably training or hanging out in their respective rooms. It was getting late, so Peter was hoping to find the brothers before they went off to bed. They were both notorious morning people, so they didn’t tend to stay up late. Peter pondered on that for a moment. Maybe that was another cultural aspect of Asgard he didn’t even think about.
As Peter rounded a corner, he heard two deep voices bickering in the living room. Peter entered the room to see Thor sitting in an armchair and Loki on the couch. They were arguing but in a friendly way.
It appeared the brothers were arguing over whether midgardian baseball or basketball was better. Neither person was actually mad, just poking fun at each other. Peter was glad to hear this was the conversation they were having because then his question wouldn’t feel so random.
Peter walked in and sat on the couch next to Loki. Thor gave him a nod and Loki turned to look at him curiously. Without missing a beat, Peter asked his question.
“ Well obviously you guys are fighting over the wrong sports. Here in America, Football is the best sport. What about in Asgard? What kinds of games do you play there?”
Both Loki and Thor looked slightly taken aback that someone dare tell them they were wrong. Peter didn’t mean for it to come out that way and started to regret it once he saw the look on their faces.
Loki turned and looked at Thor. “ Brother, why don’t we show this child what our favorite game to play is hmm? Some might call it a sport.”
Thor chuckled out loud and gave Loki a mischievous look. Peter was nervous now. It was as if the brothers were communicating with each other just with looks.
Without any hesitation, Loki leapt across the couch and pinned Peter down. Thor was quick to help as he came over and sat the the boys hips while Loki scrambled to hold his arms. Once pinned, Loki said “ Now remember boy, I did try to warn you about annoying us with your silly questions. But this time, you had the audacity to insult us? Well, I think you will rather enjoy this game.”
Peter tried to escape, but it was no use. He was stuck for good. But in the back of his mind, he was curious as to what game they were talking about.
“ You see young insect, this game is also great for dealing with annoying children who ask too many questions. I did try to warn you, but it seems you wanted to push my buttons”. Loki smirked down at Peter as he spoke teasingly.
“ So in this game, it’s you Vs Loki and me. We tickle you senseless and there’s nothing you can do about it. Maybe this will teach you not to annoy Asgardians.” Thor said as he placed his hands on Peter’s ribs.
Now Peter was deathly ticklish. And up to current, only Tony knew about it.
Peter tried to beg, but his pleas fell on deaf ears. His begging was soon replaced by rapid giggles as Thor kneaded into his lower ribs.
“ I ahhhamm soooo so so sorry! Pleahehess let me go! I promise to not ask any more quesTIons!!” Loki just rolled his eyes and held Peter’s wrist tighter. “ You wanted to know what Asgardians are like. Now you will know first hand that we do not do mercy”. With that Loki released Peter’s hands and dove into his armpits causing Peter to screech. He brought his arm down trying to protect the delicate skin but Loki was skilled and ruthless. Thor was spidering one hand on Peter’s ribs while the other consistently kneaded into Peter’s sides and hips. When Loki drilled into Peter’s highest ribs, he noticed his voice jump an octave and become more shrill.
“ Isn’t he adorable brother? We should do this more often” Loki teased as he started lightly spidering his nails across Peter’s neck. This action caused Peter to yelp and his giggles continued nonstop. Peter tried to scrunch up his shoulders, but Loki easily kept his head pinned, exploiting each sensitive spot that caused the poor boy to scream.
Thor and Loki were enjoying this game. Peter was basically their adopted brother and seeing him so happy and carefree could lift anyone's mood.
The brother kept this friendly torture going until Peter’s face was dripping in sweat and tears. Somehow, his voice wasn’t silent, but every word he tried to speak was masked with pleasant giggles and squeaks.
Thor halted his fingers and motioned for Loki to do the same. Loki had found an extremely sensitive spot under his chin and Peter’s eyes looked like they were about to pop out of his head.
“ Well, it appears that this game is nearly over. Good job brother! We have won again!” Thor and Loki high-fived. When Peter’s breathing had slowed he let out a breathy “Nearly done!!?” He couldn’t believe that they were going to continue the onslaught. Peter didn’t think he could handle much more!
Thor gently lifted Peter’s shirt to expose his belly. “ Well, no game can be completed without a celebratory feast! I must finish this with some raspberries. Loki, please hold him still”. Peter used the last of his energy to try and squirm off the couch. But, all his squirming was futile.
Thor placed his beard-clad face in Peter’s stomach and let out a cascade of raspberries. Peter let out an “ NOOO—“ but was soon cut off by his own laughter. His eyes were squeezed shut and he tried to buck his hips. All this did was cause thors prickly beard to rub his belly too, which was extremely ticklish. 30 seconds of this and the boy toast. Thor stopped his attack for good and ruffled his hair as he stood up. Loki followed suit and helped Peter sit on the couch.
Peter couldn’t form a full sentence for a few minutes but when he finally did he said “ Oh my gosh please don’t do that again! You both are relentless!” Loki and Thor laughed and handed Peter his notebook.
“ You know Peter, we weren’t actually annoyed with you. We quite enjoyed your interest in our home. Please feel free to ask any more questions so your paper gets a good grade.” Loki said as he handed Peter his pen. Peter just nodded and asked Thor and Loki about other hobbies and sports they like to participate in.
***
Peter flipped over his paper to see what grade he got. He was shocked to see an A+ written at the top in bold. He quickly texted Thor and Loki the good news.
The main reason he did so well was that he wrote about how tickling is a way for Asgardians to show their love and appreciation to each other, even if they are ruthless.
But, he would never tell the two brothers, because then they would know how much he enjoyed it.
