Taking a Look at “My Life Me”.

Well, I’ve heard a lot of horrible things about this but considering that it’s made by four people, well I’ll have to watch it see if there are better web exclusive series, like TOME. I’ve also chosen a different episode than TheMysteriousMrEnter to review for this one.

The first thing I want to bring into context is the name of the series, “My Life Me”, the name makes no sense in any context.

First, taking a look at the people who made it.

Cindy Filipenko is an editor, and she’s the head writer for the show. This gives me a horrible feeling. As a writer I feel like you should take on a writing project before you start editing, and editing your own writing, as you should be most critical of your own writing. +1 point for me.

JC Little is a children’s book author who prides herself on minimalism, she says it’s because she “Doesn’t want to intimidate” people who view her blog, but she also makes various 4/20 posts on 4/20 starring her characters, I assume she’s just a stoner with a lack of motivation to draw better things. Again that doesn’t really make a bad animator, but the minimalism of her other work really scares me. But she’s only the senior storyboard artist, which is right up her alley. +1 Point for them.

Svetlana Chmakova. She’s the head animator. She wrote a Tokyopop manga series for a while with a similar, if not the exact style that they use in this show. She’s also shown that she can imitate Cowboy Bebop’s style in a self insert comic staring her and Spike in romantic...thing I guess, I suppose she said it was a dream in the next panel. but I guess she’s a decently good mangaka but her style really doesn’t translate well to the screen.

The we have the director, Mr. Niko. Who also did Atomic Betty and Robot boy. Nether of which I have watched in like ten years, I don’t plan to go back to them either.

But now on to the actual Cartoon. Now, with most other series I would watch the first three episodes, but this one is an episodic series with no over arching plot, so I can just pick any of the episodes.

First Episode Watched: Star Stuck

And as I watch this I find out I was wrong, JC Little directed it.

The first thing I notice, well other than the cookie cutter story, is the clunky animation. Mind you it’s not as clunky as RWBY (which is a good series for it’s own merits), but being completely two dimensional doesn’t really give them any good excuses for this amount of clunky animation. It really just screams using Flash as a shortcut. And this laugh is a forced as Tidus’s from Final Fantasy 10.

The episode had a cookie cutter plot. Though it introduces the main villain as the Queen Bitch, which is cliche as all hell. And unlike Totally Spies, she doesn’t ever have to work with the characters to achieve a common goal, or at least the way this show is written, it’s safe to assume she won’t.

Second Episode Watched: Rope Burn

First rule of writing anime, keep the voices with the chibi appearance.

And this gym teacher has probably the most stiff voice actor I’ve ever heard. It’s like they just picked some random bum off the street to voice him. Though even a bum could do a better job than this.

And this is the same plot that Steven Universe did in the first season. Except they did it much better. You have the have the other character, use been abusing the hospitality of their friend (or in SU’s case his son), do something to make it up to them, to redeem themselves. But this made it about the most cliche episode of anything I’ve ever seen. It was painful to watch, and MrEnter should have really covered this episode over the one he did.

Third Episode Watched: Planets Maligned

Oh joy, a class presentation episode. About Mythology.

The first mistake they made was with Medusa, Medusa was not a Roman creature. They could have also given her various other gods but I feel like they just used basic knowledge of the gods to make this episode, which is understandable, this show is pretty shitty. And I also want to point out how horrible their teacher is, spearheading bullying like that. In reality he would have been fired, but I guess you have to use shitty cartoon logic when making a shitty cartoon.

Well at least I know the relationship between Liam and Birch now, and why they live together.

They named their cat Neko. That is the laziest cat naming I’ve seen in any cartoon. That’s like calling a dog character dog as Neko translates to cat.

Second myth mistake. Roman myth had nothing to do with Athens.

And this is another cliche plot about using tough love to teach people to take responsibility.

This series gets a Forced Tidus Laugh/10

This series is bad, horrible. But it’s like a train wreck, horrible to watch but you can’t look away from it, it’s not a guilty pleasure, because who would enjoy watching a train wreck, but you find yourself continuing to watch the series. Of course I watch it for free on Youtube so I don’t actually reward this horrible material, but if you want to watch something bad, as some of us enjoy doing, then I suggest watching this series. It’s only 1 season of 11 minute long episodes, so it’s not to torturous to those that can stomach it.
