I mean, up until volume 4 sure. I don’t see how that’s relevant now.

It’s relevant because it’s disturbing af to have a character whose family (and by extension herself) profits off abuse, have her be indifferent to it, and then prop her up as a hero. Even during vol 4 her conflict with her father stemmed from him being mean to her specifically, she couldn’t care less about the faunus her family is freaking branding.

The first episode of V7 has her starting to question it upon actually seeing the poor side of Atlas. Though it’s very likely that she simply doesn’t know about the extent of the mistreatment. Even V1 Weiss would have been against thst sort of cruelty.

She also hasn’t had a major character arc yet.

She was sharing a room with a former member of the white fang who knew exactly what the SDC was doing and it never came up? Even though the SDC’s treatment of faunus was a point of contention between them? Even though bringing up the SDC’s labour practices was one of the first things Blake said to her? “uwu Weiss just doesn’t know” is just a convenient handwave to excuse bad writing.

So...

I live in Canada, where the first nations people actually have a fairly similar history with the government. I'm also white as snow, so I haven't experienced that history for myself.

I've never held a prejudice against the first nations people at all. I grew up around a lot of highly influential first nations people in my area but never really understood their plight until I got a chance to experience actually living in their communities during a film shoot. At that point, the living conditions they have came to the forefront for me. They aren't treated well, and where I didn't used to go to Canada Day protests as an ally, I do now. My ignorance came from not knowing through first hand experience. I'm only in the lower middle class, I can't even imagine if I'd been upper class with an actual prejudice having these living conditions brought to light.

People can be blissfully unaware of other's suffering. Her family probably hit the suffering it had been causing from her.

You know if this was her reintroduction I could understand Corrin not realizing it was her but by this point in the game they could be married or at the very least best friends. My corrin was married to Azura by this point he should have realized it was her.

Believe it or not, I’m actually going to talk about character motivations. Because anyone who thinks that Ruby stands a chance against Son Goku needs to reevaluate their idea on what ‘power’ is. Power levels might be bullshit, but not even Ruby stands a chance against Goku (Hell, I’m pretty sure that Yamcha could beat her).

These two characters can’t be compared though. Their motivations are different, hell, their entire characters are different.

Goku likes fighting and constantly seeks strength. Ruby’s just trying to survive.

Goku is basically a God. Ruby isn’t even closed to that.

I mean neither are emotionally complex characters, so they share that.

You’re talking to sonebody who doesn’t think Dragonball is a good series, it’s not bad either, just okay.

Goku also always wins, I’d be surprised if he lost against somebody and never got another chance to fight them. He always pulls a better form out of his ass to win, which makes him extremely boring to me. The original Dragonball was enjoyable but everything after is just the same tired story on repeat. Vegeta is interesting, but only because he has a side plot with his son.

And Goku better have some development after over 400 episodes. RWBY’s only around 8 hours long so far (give or take a couple hours) and only around ¾ of that includes Ruby.

She’s hardly developed since Volume 1. I don’t think the plot is focused on Ruby most of the time. Also, I’m pretty sure that the total amount of episodes should count towards RWBY if the total amount of episodes counts towards DragonBall. Ergo, if after nearly 50 episodes, Ruby’s motives are still really vague and underwhelming when Goku’s motives are well-established early on, and are on some level of being compelling, then I’d say that Goku is a superior protagonist.

Maybe you’d want to complain about how a friend of mine compared Ruby Rose to Maka from Soul Eater.

Because if Goku’s simple goals are more compelling that Ruby’s, then I’d say that the show has done a bad job of making Ruby’s motives and goals compelling.

Okay... I don't find Goku's goals compelling. I'm not much for shounen anime so "I want to get stronger" doesn't really strike me as a strong motive.

And Ruby and Maka actually have a fair amount in common character-wise. Both want to help people and see the best in others. And Soul Eater does actually have a better narrative, I'll agree there. Maka actually has a reason that she wants to get stronger rather than just wanting to get stronger. She has an overarching motive, which Ruby really doesn't.

Currently Ruby's just trying to survive and end these experiences without having any real motives. She's currently written as more of an audience surrogate in the vein of Max from Mad Max. The show is called RWBY and not Ruby after all.

They've stated a few goals for the writing in volume 6, and focusing more on Ruby is one of them.

Wow… much like my last response to you, grasping at straws.

Though Kryptonite makes no sense because it should honestly just make Supes basically human rather than putting him into a weaker than human state. I mean we see Kryptonians on Krypton during most renditions and they’re up and walking and stuff like that. It’s not like being on their Home Planet cripples them. So kryptonite makes no sense from a narrative stand point.

I’m not even defending RWBY’s silver eyes, those are definitely just a lazy McGuffin created by a guy who had not idea how to write originally (remember that Monty came up with the ideas for both the Maidens and the Silver Eyed Warriors).

Y’know, Yang jumping down the elevator without her arm being explained by her belief that she should have died when she went looking for Raven catching up to her would be a pretty interesting explanation as to why she made that reckless move in the first place, and make for some interesting character development.

But I am pretty confident that that wasn’t what the writers were intending, and that this sort of behavior will never be addressed at all.

Which sucks since it feels like Yang took some steps back in that department with that ‘abandoning the arm’ scene.

Seriously. I’m pretty sure she could have just jerked that arm away from Mercury. There’s a time and a place for using brute force to get past your opponent, and that was most certainly a time for it.

Is it alright if I blame Taiyang for that?

What joke?- There was no joke there. That was a scene where Yang could have easily yanked her arm away, but she instead chose to abandon it.

And since we’ve established that I’m both cynical and pessimistic, I highly doubt that the intention was that Yang’s belief that she should have died back when she went out looking for Raven was deliberate.

Seriously, what joke are you referring to?- I don’t see a joke. I see a scene where Tai’s comments of “You shouldn’t rely on brute strength” basically culminating in Yang more or less doing a move where she’s going up against two maidens and her mother (from her perspective), was more or less his fault.

It’s not clear what the intent was. What was Yang going to do if she went down there and Cinder had won?- Ask nicely to not take the relic?- Fight her with one arm?

It felt that Yang wants to die, but that scene has so many flaws, and the writing is super inconsistent to the point that I doubt that the deliberate intent was that she still thinks she should have died.

Cinemasins would tear this show apart if it was their job to do so to web series. But they stick to movies, and bring up good points when they aren’t being petty with comments like “roll credits” and “scene does not contain a lap dance.”

Cinemasins nitpicks for entertainment value. He doesn't actually write serious reviews ij the same way that he does his how, so his nitpicking is meant to be a joke.

Yang also never wanted to die. There's a difference between trauma triggered and suicidal depression. As I said. Grasping for straws.

RWBY is like Suicide Squad

Both improvable with a shitton of postproduction work and editing, but only within the limits of the botched writing, setting and everything, really. Nice character designs, some flashy action scenes, a couple of good and a bunch of bad performances, enjoyable music without meaningful connection to the scenes. Plot is way too big and contrieved both for writers and characters, yet somehow still unimaginative paint-by-numbers patchwork. Underwhelming villains. Nonsensical motivations. A mastermind supposedly on the good side being a total moron. Characters tagging along pointlessly. Characters introduced out of nowhere. Characters flat out disappearing untill they are needed. Virtuesignaling with questionable results. Outrageous abuse of elevators. Only one black dude, but he is cooler than everybody else combined. Awkward dancing. A never fulfilled promise, both in universe and as a meta about the whole thing not living up to expectations or to the bare minimum. Majority of their fans are hellbent on enjoying it no matter what it takes. Jaune. Oh wait, no that’s just RWBY, Suicide Squad still wins by a hairbreadth.

Okay...

Suicide Squad had a terrible Joker, a terrible Harley, and a terrible Enchantress. All three strayed way too far from the comic book versions to the point where the two properties are completely different things.

Suicide Squad effectively uses a damsel in distress plot with the added plot of saving the city, something Harley wouldn’t at all care about for any reason and something the Joker, regardless of his rendition, would hate doing (because anarchy is kind of his thing as a standard). They force a romance between Jane and that military guy and just kind of throw Katana under the bus as a character (who’s a trained assassin using a katana possessed by her late husband). Amanda Waller is literally the only good character in Suicide Squad but she’s vastly less ruthless than in the comics. I liked Will Smith as Deadshot, but that’s pretty much it.

See... Ruby has likable characters (for the most part), a competent plot (not a great one) and at least some good character relationships. It’s overall a fun series and isn’t written to be the best thing on the planet. Though I’d give it between a 5 and a 6/10. As somebody who used to frequent bad anime and movies, this is far from the worst series ever. I mean it’s not School Days bad or Elfen Lied bad. And I never regret watching it like I did with Suicide Squad.

Two: Both of them also attend schools for fighting monsters.

I was unaware of that. Though Maka attends a school where she learns to fight witches and demons while Ruby fights vastly less powerful beings. I mean it’s not really a competition, Maka’s less mobile, sure, but she’s much more durable and has a lot more techniques that could be used in combat, including the Black Blood that forces her to ignore all pain while losing all sensibility. I haven’t even finished the series and it’s no competition by the second season.

I mean there’s going to be a salty part of the fan base but that happens with literally every fan base when death battle comes around. Did you forget about the Goku vs Superman battle? Or the Tifa vs Yang battle?

On the other hand, Screwattack is owned by Roosterteeth now. So... Ruby may win.

Watching the first episode of Roosterteeth’s Show that’s Aesthetically Similar to AtLA and has similar names Nomad of Nowhere…

And it’s already better at the whole “Show, don’t Tell” thing than RVVBY.

It also has uninspired character designs, uninspired comedy, and jokes that make on sense. Comparing the first episode of RWBY to this. You can kind of tell that it isn’t anybody’s passion project nor will it ever be.

Take a look at RWBY’s first episode. Roman has design inspired by Alex from a Clockwork orange and moves in a very similar way, his weapon is a cane that fires explosives. You tell up front that he’s charismatic and he prefers not to get his hands dirty, instead he travels with a group of henchmen.

I can’t even remember the name of the villain for the first episode of Nomad of Nowhere. Her design is honestly extremely stereotypical for character types and they use her to make the most baseline jokes they could give to a sadist. She comes off as unimportant in the scheme of things because she’s just written as a bounty hunter rather than having her own character. I think I was supposed to laugh when she revealed the name of her bounty hunting group (the Dandy Lions) but that joke was so forced and honestly expected that I couldn’t bring myself to laugh at it.

The Nomad has probably the best character design and concept, too bad it’s wasted on poorly animated comedy though. I honestly like the idea of a character who doesn’t talk and has to talk through gestures.

Honestly, it all comes down to what reaches it’s goal better.

Nomad to Nowhere doesn’t have the right timing to be a slapstick comedy, which it was trying so hard to be in that first episode. While RWBY establishes itself very well as an action series in the first episode.

Why am I such an asshole?

Look. Volume 4 fucking sucked. It sucked SO BAD to the point that I actually hated what the show had become. I only got into RW/BY a bit before volume 3 had started. I binged the first two volumes because it looked interesting. It had a lot of potential. Sure, there were some times that I wished that we didn’t have to slog through some episodes (specifically the ones centering around vomit boy), but the show was still decent in my eyes.
