Super Mushroom Tee Folding Tutorial!
Looking at the final outcome I’m not sure if I want to call this tee shirt the Mushroom tee or the Eye of Sauron. I really like the shape of the design and I hope you give this one a try. First I would pick out some colors that blend together well as there wasn’t a lot of space between the folds and the colors will overlap some. I like using the warmer colors more towards the center of the design to give it that eye of Sauron feel. I used lemon yellow, hot pink, regular red, turquoise blue and purple. As always gather your supplies together, colors in squeeze bottles, gloves, rubber bands, washable kids marker, tee shirt soaked in soda ash, dye rack, paper towels, plastic bag and a flat clean work surface. Step1. Fold the tee shirt in half long ways and lay flat on the work surface. Make sure the folded crease is facing you. Step 2. Use the washable kids marker to draw 3 half circle shapes. A smaller half circle near the collar then the larger one in the middle and another smaller one below that but not all the way to the bottom of the tee shirt. Draw a diamond shape in the center of the larger half circle and a separate diagonal line from the armpit of the tee across the sleeve at a sharp angle. Step3. Using a fan fold follow the line of the half circle shapes to create a straight line using the marker line as a guide. Step 4. Rubberband the shirt at the marker line. Step 5. Use a fan fold to follow the line of the diamond shape. Step 6. Rubberband the shirt at that marker line. Step 7. Use a fan fold to follow the line of the diagonal line on the sleeve and rubberband that portion of the shirt at the marker line as well. Step 8. Rubber band the shirt inbetween the other rubberbands to form sections on the tee shirt as this is where each separate dye color will go. Step 9. After the tee shirt is bound with rubberbands place it on the dye rack. Start dyeing the tee shirt from the smaller portion of the shirt first making sure to turn the tee shirt over and dye both sides. To ensure the dye is in the folds make sure to give the fabric in each section a light pinch and gently separate the folds to make sure you are not seeing white fabric inbetween. Use the point of the squeeze tip to go into the folds completely. Step 10. Wrap the tee shirt in the plastic bag for up to 24 hours or at least for 6-10 hours minimum. Step 11. Rinse the tee shirt in cold water to remove excess dye and then wash the tee shirt in professional textile detergent or synthrapol on hot water setting and dry as usual. Good luck and happy dyeing!
