Everyone told me I'm gonna be fine. I never believed any of them and it felt acrid and stale until you said it, like it was so simple and obvious; up there with "the sky's blue" and "some birds mate for life." Someone took the breath out of my chest and forced it over my tongue and through my lips so it sounded like "thank you" and my eyes changed color when I looked at you. Some gold and some blue and everything up until that didn't matter. I paid thousands to have a stranger tell me I was ok, and every time I left her office I split myself open again. But you came onto the porch, cracked open a beer, and made a bed in the hole I'd carved in myself. And I curled up next to you and we started stitching. Now the wound is sealed up, but every time it throbs I gold and blue you and you say "all is well," and goddammit you might be right.
