“When Serena Williams barrelled in my direction this past February at an event, nails done, hair done, everything did, I’ll be honest and say I looked behind me to see who she was running to. It was Serena Williams, after all . Serena-numberonetennisplayerintheworld-Williams. Whose match I had watched with bated breath at the previous Open, giggling with delight to be that close to her legendary serve. Turns out this fancylady was coming to me. We hit it off immediately, taking pictures, laughing through the flag football game we were both playing in, and chatting not about tennis or acting, but about all the good old fashioned girly stuff. So began our friendship. She quickly became a confidante I would text when I was traveling, the friend I would rally around for her tennis matches, and the down to earth chick I was able to grab lunch with just a couple weeks ago in Toronto. We are both the same age, have a penchant for hot sauces and adore fashion, but what connects us more than those things is perhaps our belief in exceeding expectations – our endless ambition. Serena is undoubtedly one of the best tennis players the world has ever seen. With a record breaking 29 Grand Slam titles and several Olympic gold medals to her legacy, the fabulous Ms. Williams does a TIG Talk with me today. “It was about two years ago at a party for Kerry Washington’s cover of Elle Magazine that I met Ms. Katie Lowes. Let me tell you something - she’s awesome. She’s what you want actresses to be - equal parts talented and authentic. Super down to earth, but always stunning on a red carpet - a delicate balance of being able to straddle both worlds of real girl and TV star. Now when we met, I hadn’t seen Scandal, but my goodness did I ever catch up. Not only do I have a serious girl crush on Quinn Perkins, the character that Katie brings to life with layer and interest on the Shonda Rhimes drama, but I’ve gotta tell you - Kate Lowes is in that same category. I don’t bump into her as often as I’d like, but rest assured that this Queens native and Tisch graduate, who also happens to be a founding member of IAMA Theatre Company, is an absolute force to be reckoned with. “When I launched this site several months ago, the TIG Talk feature was devised as a way to introduce you to people that you either know (think Heidi Klum) or that you definitely need to know. Misty Copeland is perhaps the former, and if not, then she most certainly is the latter. Currently dancing the role of Clara in the American Ballet Theater’s production of The Nutcracker, she is the first African American female soloist in over two decades at ABT (and the second everrr). Earlier this year, President Obama invited her to be on the President’s Council on Fitness, Heath, and Nutrition; she published a New York Times bestselling memoir, Life in Motion, in March and a children’s book, Firebird, which came out in September; oh, and lest we forget her induction into the National Boys and Girls Hall of Fame, her countless endorsement deals, and the fact that she is redefining the world of the arts. Here’s the thing—as a biracial woman, I know what it’s like to want to follow your dreams and hear a lot of “no’s” along the way—not as a reflection of your talent but because you’re just not quite how they envisioned the role. (Something that gets harder as you get older – if you were born after 1985, trust me on this). Such was the case when I met James Chau at One Young World last fall in Dublin. Little did I know that this savvy and charming gent is a broadcaster and writer who has interviewed world figures to the likes of Winnie Mandela and Robert Mugabe; that he’s an award winning journalist and news anchor who captured an audience of 85 million (yes, 85 million) for over a decade at the helm of China Central Television’s CCTV. Many moons ago, my friend Misan told me that James and I would connect someday, and the moment we did it all made sense. James is a UNAIDS Goodwill Ambassador, a graduate of Cambridge, and a lover of culture and arts. You know how I often rattle on about “being the change you wish to see in the world.” Well, he’s the guy that’s doing just that. Authentically, and passionately. “Over a perfect dinner at Whitehall [now closed] in NYC, I meet Elettra Wiedemann for the first time. We are with stylist extraordinaire, Chloe Hartstein, and my beauty guru, Daniel Martin. And while ordering mushy pea fritters, a plate of oysters, a few branzini, and frites for days, I look over at Elettra and think — “My lord, she is so beautiful. So stunningly naturally ‘what kind of moisturizer do you use’ beautiful, that she looks like those girls in magazines.” And then you realize, oh wait, she is. She was discovered by photog icon, Bruce Weber, she has graced every magazine with caché from French Vogue to Harpers Bazaar, and has been the face of Lancome, Ferragamo, Agent Provocateur, and countless others. But when you sit next to her and break bread (or in this case pea fritters), you forget that she is that girl. What you see instead is the kind of chick you just wanna hang with. The girl gardens, and sprouts her own lettuces, she trains with a swim team for (ya know) fun, competes in triathlons, and laughs loudly and unapologetically like the friends you’ve had since you were 14. And lest we forget that she also happens to have her Masters degree from the London School of Economics in Biomedicine. Oh, and that her dad is a former Calvin Klein model turned Microsoft exec (who she effusively adores), her mom is esteemed actress, Isabella Rosellini (from the lineage of iconic film director Roberto Rossellini), and, well, her grandmother was (brace yourselves) Ingrid Bergman. But you wouldn’t know it, because she would never lead with it. She is just that f-ing fantastic.

Elettra is soon starting her own website, entitled The Impatient Foodie, and I for one, could not be more excited to see what she has in store. Because, lady, I feel ya… when you need to serve something yummy for guests and that soufflé is just not rising as planned… Cue the moment you serve up some vodka soaked gummy bears** over some vanilla gelato – a move that both Elettra and I vouch for whole heartedly. “Little girls dream of being princesses. I, for one, was all about She-Ra, Princess of Power. And grown women seem to retain this childhood fantasy. Just look at the pomp and circumstance surrounding the royal wedding and endless conversation about Princess Kate. So when my dear friend, Misan Harriman, introduced me to Princess Alia Al Senussi, I had a bit of a “pinch-myself-I’m-emailing-with-a-princess” moment. The Al Senussi family was exiled from Libya when Gaddhafi seized the throne in a coup d’état. But that hasn’t stopped Alia from flexing her respective royal muscle. Alia is on the Board of Trustees for Global Heritage Fund, where she concentrates on their activities in Libya.

So yeah, she’s cool. 

She graduated from Brown in 2003 with a double major in International Relations & Middle East Studies. She also has her MSc in Law, Anthropology & Science from the London School of Economics, and is working on her PhD in Middle Eastern Politics.

So yeah, she’s smart.

As VIP Relations for Art Basel, the world’s premier international art show for modern and contemporary works, she actively promotes Middle Eastern art on a global level. Shifting preconceived notions, and advancing the understanding of some lesser known works is all part of the day job for this incredible woman of the world.
