Last Fortress of the Knights - Fort Tigne - Tigne Point - Sliema
Built in 1795, Fort Tigne is the last major fortification built by the Knights of St John & one of the worlds oldest Polygonal forts. It was one of the few fortifications which actively resisted the French Invasion of 1798. During British rule its design was heavily modified in order to accommodate more modern weaponry & tactics. The fort also suffered damage during the Axis arial bombardment of World War 2. When British Forces left Malta in 1979 it was left abandoned until the early 2000s when MIDI plc started the redevelopment of the Tigne area and closed the fort to the public.
