DOCTOR FUNK ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ We have had a little snow❄ for the first time this year in London so I really fancied something to help #tikithesnowaway. I was especially in the mood to recreate the first Doctor Funk I had when requesting a 'funky rum based drink' at Happiness Forgets 9/10 years ago when I lived just around the corner from it...great times!🍹 ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ At this time I was unaware of the history of the drink and thought it was named due to the flavours of the potent flavourful rum and absinthe combination. I later learned that Doctor Funk was named after a German physician based in Samoa 1880-1911 - Dr Bernhard Funk. The physician of Robert Louis Stevenson, when he relocated to the South Pacific in his last years, Dr Funk would often "prescribe" a potent mix of absinthe, lime and seltzer slightly sweetened with grenadine as a drink to ward off what ails you. 🍹 ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ This tart highball became popular on the island. So much so that when Ernest Gantt came across it during his travels in the South Pacific it inspired him to fortify it with rum and add it to his menu when openening his tiki genre creating bar Don the Beachcomber in 1933. This consequently makes the Doctor Funk the earliest Polynesian tiki drink.
