TikTok and Its Implications for the USA (cont'd)
Again, I must apologize. I took an edible and it is doing its thing as I type this. But I will not be an obstacles for awareness about current events.
So America had a hearing with the CEO of Tiktok, Shou Chew. It was not friendly, what did you think? America has unresolved xenophobia towards China specifically for decades, and it manifested very clearly in the bipartisan Committee of Commerce.
Mr. Chew was respectful in the face of antagonistic prodding in a language that was not his native language. Maybe it's just because I consider myself to be hyperaware of how hard it is to learn multiple languages, especially Mandarin/Cantonese and English because they're so opposite of each other, that I'm more sensitive to it.He is not Chinese and the company is headquartered outside of China. Tiktok is even banned in mainland China.
The committee constantly remarked "I doubt that' in the face of his answers. One old bastard yelled "When am I going to get paid for the data of my neighbors, my kids, my grandkids? When am I GOING TO GET PAID" and like in Rome, maybe that's the only benefit of having senility in the Senate, they sometimes say the quiet parts out loud.
The bill they're trying to make law and pass that they're proposing to defend us from the big evil China monster that they're portraying that they are protecting us from (I'm sorry I'm high right now remember) is not good. Not only does it ban Tiktok, it gives the American government to be able to ban any social media outlet or source they want, anything on the internet. And for anyone who dreamed of being a rebel or related to any political rebel in any movie or show ever, you know that's a bad thing. Cutting off communication and sealing your citizens off from the rest of the world and each other? That's a big First Amendment violation, even if it's for their supposed safety. In the 21st century, you would be building a virtual glass wall to hem in each American's their online presence.
Foreign friends, can you imagine what Americans you may have engaged with on this site may have been like if you weren't there to educate them about things? Because if they're cut off from the world, they are going to only have governmental regulated propaganda to shape their understanding of the world, and also themselves.
