Alto saxophonist Tim Berne has been making records since the 1980s. He’s in it for the long haul, and neither the hollowing out of the jazz business around the time he came into it nor the subsequent near-collapse of the record industry have capsized this survivor’s rowboat. Survival requires adaptability, and one way that Berne has adapted is by varying his associates and approaches. So, while he’s made his share of roughly packaged, self-released recordings that are in line with the aesthetics of his first work, he’s also put both feet into the pool of polished sound.
