Song Review: David Crosby & the Lighthouse Band - “1974” (Live, Dec. 8, 2018)

Repurposing an unused demo dating to its titular year - “1974” - and fashioning a hopeful set of 2018 lyrics about living life and living on after life, David Crosby & the Lighthouse Band proved the music wholly relevant 44 years down the road.

The group, Crosby and relative youngsters Becca Stevens, Michelle Willis and Michael League, first recorded the four-way co-write for Here if You Listen and it’s now the lead single from the forthcoming Live at the Capitol Theatre, to be released Nov. 25 in audio and video formats.

Played slightly faster than in the studio, “1974” remains pure on stage with the sounds of fingers on guitar strings adding extra accompaniment to Crosby’s latest harmony band, which sings in call-and-response manner:

Will our love beat on (after we are gone?)/traveling beyond (what do we become?)/is there a reason love and song go on and on?

Existential questions no one can answer. There is little doubt, however, “1974” will live on alongside Crosby’s best work.

Bokanté: the fresh new group founded by musician and composer Michael League, of Grammy-winning instrumental jazz collective, Snarky Puppy. A super group of players from five countries and four continents, different genders, races and generations working in harmony, celebrating individuality, united in the belief that music should be a voice for the voiceless. The Metropole Orkest: that multiple Grammy-winning hybrid ensemble, part jazz big band, part symphony orchestra, helmed by feted English conductor Jules Buckley, and based in the Netherlands. The message delivered by Bokanté and the Metropole Orkest, by these two determinedly aware and musically gifted outfits, is laced throughout new album What Heat – and it is urgent. Injustice is raging all around. Look. Notice. Wake up.
