Anna Torv and Hunter Page Lochard make great costars together, with lots of onscreen chemistry. Did you know that The Newsreader is not the only show they have starred together in?
During lockdown in 2021, the ABC Sunday night dramas became a staple throughout the weeks of social distancing and slowly getting back into the community. Directly following the conclusion of The Newsreader’s first season was Fires, a mini series about the stories of multiple characters and their experiences of horrific bushfires. The series dealt with love and loss, isolation and separation, and fear and flames across its six episodes.
Hunter and Anna played the characters of Mott Mills and Lally Robinson; a junior firefighter thrown into the deep end of his job while falling in love, and a woman who has to decide whether she should stay to defend her property or evacuate while she could.
Both of their performances were outstanding. Mott had to bear witness to the trauma of others, constantly put his life on the line, and navigate a personal loss that was beyond devastating. After a fearful night being left alone on her rural property, Lally has the heartbreaking realisation that her partner was going to risk his life and choose not to evacuate, and if she was going to leave, it would be on her own.
Lally’s partner, Adrian Cash, was played by Dan Spielman, who would end up playing Channel Seven news and current affairs director Vincent Callahan in Seasons Two and Three of The Newsreader! It was such a delightful surprise seeing Anna and Dan back on screen together! Fires also had appearances from our Daniel Henshall (Bill) and Mark Leonard Winter (Russ from Season One), playing emergency operator Kip Fisher and recovering addict Joel Welch, both delivering stunning performances too.
If you are looking for more quality Australian drama to watch, I highly recommend Fires. It’s heavy viewing, so you will need some tissues on hand, but I promise you that it is a story you will never forget ❤️
