Archie's R/C Racers doughnut traps
This became a joke between my brother and I. That time when the baddie in Archie's R/C Racers placed a shrunken Betty and Jughead, as they were trying to escape, into the hole of a broccoli-frosted doughnut. It was the sign of a comic series gone haywire. And the only reason I had this comic book was I bought all nine in the mail order checklist deal -- so I really was not up on what was going on in Archie 's R/C Racers -- and what was the deal with this 10 issue product placement of a series anyways.
Faculty Funnies lasted five issues. Collect 'em all I guess. And I am probably too cranky and critical of that thing. To argue, I would have to either focus more attention on the detriments of that series or the virtues of a series like Archie's R/C Racers -- and that is pointless. But what strikes me with Archie's R/C Racers -- and the moment of this baddie trying to disrupt the race who shrinks a bunch of the characters and sticks Betty and Jughead into the hole of a broccoli frosted doughnut, is that there is a definite logic of the creative process that will get us here. You are tasked with this series. Begin with the idea of some forcing of geography lessons maybe, and you always have the requirement of skipping over to a panel with Leroy giving R/C model tips as means to egg you the reader to pick up on this hobby that this comic book is selling. But after that, and with a knowledge that this comic is not long for the world -- always have a few issues left -- what else are you supposed to create for this comic book series? I'm sorry but, you really can only get goofy with it -- you are in a throw your hands up in the air and "screw it!" spot. Objectively this is probably worse than the "Awesome Foursome" faculty superhero team of Faculty Funnies -- Glaidir and Goldberg strained comic set ups on superpowers in the real world -- but it gets more amusing in its concoction.
How convenient. They stumble on a solution!
On some drive with my parents and brother. My brother references, for whatever reason, that time in Archie R/C Racers when the baddie shrunk Betty and Jughead and stuck them into a broccoli frosted doughnut hole. My parents pick up on this, and go off on a tangent, ticking off various faulty and hackneyed writing on different tv shows. They have a particular bug up their butt on Chicago Hope. As a means to demonstrate how off topic they are getting, my brother reiterates, "but that is nothing compared to the time the bad guy shrunk Betty and Jughead and trapped them into the middle of a broccoli frosted doughnut." To which my mom replied, "I think an Emmy nominated network produced tv series is expected to have a higher level of writing." Maybe, but it is still shrinking the two characters and sticking them in the middle of a broccoli frosted doughnut.
A bunch of these comics appear to have been created with Saturday morning tv in mind. Don't know how you consider expectations.:
