The week had went past fairly quick, full of festivities in which you and Megan had been attached to the hip. For Christmas dinner, gift giving, it all took place with the both of you glued together.
After-all, thats what best friends are for right? Either way Christmas had faded just as fast as it’d came and next on the list was new years! You and Megan had finally cleared schedules to spend new years together. Not in any regular place, but Times Square! It was always a dream to visit with her.
But all Megan could think about was making you her new year’s kiss.
-
The 31st came fairly quick, you and Megan woke up and within two hours were already with each other giggling at TikTok’s in a small cafe, each holding a latte.
You had always dreamt of a new year’s kiss, wondering if you’d ever meet someone who could love you the way you loved, after all everyone knew about your unfortunate love life. Man-children and toxic women alike, you were nothing short of unlucky in the dating scene, and Megan knew that. She knew all too well how horribly your past relationships had went, and for her new year’s resolution she was hoping to break that cycle.
-
The clock had ticked by to 11pm, you and Megan had found yourselves a comfy spot to sit and wait for the clock to strike twelve.
You had been yapping her ear off about a new game coming out and she just kept nodding as you rambled about the storyline. She was infatuated, the way the corners if your eyes crinkled when you smiled, the way you looked at her when you spoke so enthusiastically. God everything about you just made her heart go 100 miles per hour.
Megan had her hand locked with yours as you stared up at the sky, snow was falling. You grinned.
“Can we build a snow man after this mei?”
She smiled back and squeezed your hand, pulling you into her side.
“Is that even a question? Of course.”
You both grinned at each other.
-
Time passed so fast, with a world that seemed to never stop moving, you could only wonder why you were blessed with a ‘friend’ like Megan.
Loud counting quickly snapped you out of your thoughts. The countdown was happening? You looked over at Megan and then began counting loudly along with the crowd, she just watched you with a warm smile.
“5,4,3,2,1!!”
Confetti began raining down in the crowds, it was gorgeous— unlike anything you had ever seem before. You glanced back at Megan, only to be met with a warm kiss.
Her lips were soft, warm. They felt so right against your own. You froze for a second before melting, your hands falling to her sides as you held her closer. You only realised you had kissed her when they bith if you had pulled back, panting slightly. The kiss was so perfect, confetti falling all around you both. It felt almost unreal.
“Did we just?—“
“Yeah.”
Megan muttered as she smiled nervously. You blinked once, then twice, trying to decipher whether this was a figment of your imagination or if you had really just kissed her. For a moment you just stared at her, trying to engrain the look of love that was plastered on her face into your memory.
You let out a shaky sigh and pulled her back in for a quick peck.
“You should’ve done it sooner.”
You muttered as she pulled you into her arms. The snow fell around you, covering the floors in a soft white sheet. You pulled back and gave crooked smile.
“So about that snowman?—“
Megan chuckled softly and pulled you by the hand.
“Uh huh. C’mon let’s go build it then.”
-
You both now stood in front of the lopsided snowman with no nose and a crooked pebble grin. He wasn’t perfect, but he was yours.
Megan had waited until you had your back turned, pushing into the the sides snowman to give him arms. She balled up snow and hurled it at your back, breaking out into a fit of giggles when you yelped.
“You little—“
Megan was fast, but not fast enough. She only made it a few metres away before getting tackled on the soft snow. She turned over and gave a nervous giggle as she was met face to face with you.
“I’m sorry..”
She murmured, you just pressed a kiss to her lips, before pulling back with a satisfied hum.
“We’re even now.”
-
The walk home was nowhere near silent, you nervously rambled to her trying to fill the silence.
When you both had reached the hotel, and taken warm showers and settled in your pyjamas, she held your hands and looked at you nervously.
“Hey, y’know i was thinking maybe we could go out? Somewhere for us y’know?”
Your eyes softened as they scanned hers before you nodded, you could see the relief that filled her body when she realised you liked her just as much as she did you.
“Yeah. I’d like that a lot actually.”
-
New years meant new beginnings, a chance to experience new things and meet new people.
Now all Megan could think was about how beautiful you looked next to her. Maybe this wasn’t how you expected new years would go, but you’d be lying if you said this wasn’t the best you’d ever had. Next to your best friend, more like the love of your life.

“I’d shot Richard before and he was into having either masks or massive bears in the shots. This time, it was in the middle of Times Square and he had a couple of friends with him wearing masks of Richard’s face.”
