Reply: Emily and Trellis

First off, that sketch comic was amazingly hilarious.

I really identify with Emily and Trellis the most as well as you do. Emily is one that I feel for on such a deep level. First off, she’s a strong female protagonist and yet she is realistic. Her most major flaws is that she does not let things go easily, as her father’s death and her anger over it consumes her quite figuratively and literally. She does not want to be a burden, remains bitter over some things and she does not have an easy time communicating with others, resulting in her bottling up emotions. I do also find it frustrating that Emily, a fourteen year old girl who is struggling with her father’s death has an entire world’s fate rested on her shoulders. She was struggling with her own personal problems and her lack of the ability to open up made it a hundred times worse. In hindsight, Emily’s fall to the stone was coming all along.

Trellis did have the most profound character development as he went from a semi-villain to one of the deepest heroes in the story. Trellis is a person of integrity who struggled with selfishness and distrust that was brought up because of his upbringing and the racism against elves by other Alledians. He is one who won the hearts of so many readers as he is one people can relate to on such a deep level be it with family matters, racism or prejudice. He had to gain Emily’s trust in a very realistic way, having to slowly learn more about her and in turn, she learned more about him and his motives. 

As of their relationship, they have grown from enemies to strong, trusted allies. The development of their relationship has led many fans, including myself to hope for them to develop a romantic relationship to develop between the two although their relationship can either be determined as platonic or romantic.

I adore the bond they have grown as they have developed the most on their own and in relation to each other. Emily shows no contempt to elves as her and her crew have been called elf sympathizers, showed mercy on him many times even after he had threatened her family and he became one of the people she trusted the most. Trellis has opened up to her before anyone else, even his own brother and is reluctant to hurt her, even as in her phoenix form, protecting her from Gabilan. They have the most developed relationship and personalities on screen (or on paper, in this instance) and have become major fan favorites.

(A/N: I could not have worded better than this, thank you! :D This really helped me understand Emily better, and I can finally see some relatable light. Honestly, I feared Amulet would be one of those stories that does and Asspull™ [see tvtropes] or even Deus ex Machina™ but I’ve released a huge breathe of relief it went on a logical and reasonable turn when Emily fell unto the stone’s power and unto her grudge. That was the moment my interest in the series re-ignited because it makes the ending even more mysterious. Kibuishi-san sure as fuck has no qualms killing characters, who will manage to live til Book 8 I wonder?

Her situation of having emotionally-supportive loved ones but lacking communication for the sake of not being a burden is by all means, relatable and sadly common.

And of course, Trellis! You complex fuck I’m also still tryna figure out [kinda, I’m having a hard tine differentiating how I see him and how he is portrayed] but frankly, this is what I see: he’s honest but secretive, loyal but won’t hesitate to stab someone in the back if he has to [by that I meant the King], selfish but also selfless, has self-preservation but self-sacrificing, arrogant but doubtful of self. I may or may not be wrong, but I’ve reread the Books too many times ; - ;).

Also, have you noticed? He forgives people way too fast. Max? Punches him twice but respectfully listens to him on his last moments. Luger? Attacks him too, but saves him later nonetheless even though he could sabotage his survival. Gabilan? Sure you took my memories which is an extreme breach of basic rights but man I hope you lived. He doesn’t seem the type to hold grudges it seems.

Anyways, Emily and Trellis’s trust for each other is quite something that’s interestingly developed over the Books, most significantly during The Prince of the Elves til Firelight. At Book 5, she says she doesn’t care about him but rather the results of their actions. In Book 6, she refuses to abandon him because he could die and that he’s one of her ‘people’. Cool.

Unfortunately and ironically! The one who complains of discrimination against people like himself but is hypocritically racist as well, is Enzo, one of her crew! But without a doubt, Navin who never had anything against elves, even towards Trellis and Luger, got a bad end of the stick as evidenced by Book 6, which appears he doesn’t have much friends aside from Alyson and often gets ruthlessness from his teacher due to being an 'elf-sympathizer’ [which he does not deserve, AT ALL].

Without a doubt, the slow development of them caring about each other is quite inspiring and endearing in a good and organic way. It’s quite something really and thankfully, doesn’t fall flat like most other relationships in the series. Thank you for the submission! :) )

Hell yeah! Someone else finally put it into words. I hate Max for what he had done but I love the fact that there is more to his character than just being a villian. He is a self-centered cruel person who only felt some form of remorse after his only real friend confronted him. I feel bad for his loss and things might have gone differently had Layra not died, but that doesn’t excuse the decades of destruction he has caused under the excuse of avenging his friend. This could’ve been avoided if he had got on the airship with her, either dying with her or using his stone to protect her from the blast. When it comes to his death scene, it feels a little like a last minute half assed redemption arc despite it being clear that he is still seen as a villian. The scene with him and Layra was emotional, but after that his punishment doesn’t seem like enough. He quickly ages and dies that’s it. It doesn’t come close to making up for all the lies he destroyed. I kind of wish that he was forced to stay alive and help as he was the elf kings right hand man, but then that leaves a lot of space for a full on redemption and I love him too much as a villian for that to happen.

(Yeah Max is a little shit and thank you for adding Riva to that list I love her character so much and don’t see much for her in the fandom and get happy every time she’s included)

(A/N: THAT'S the term I'm looking for! Half-assed redemption attempt, thank you! I'm hella annoyed for Kibuishi-san constantly doing that, like it doesn't make sense and kinda lazy, a cheap attempt to make a character more loved/appealing? 'Cause it ain't workin'. Max is better off being remembered as a tragic villain tbh. Riva is actually my second favourite character! Just after Trellis. Man I fell in love with her real fast. I hope she doesn't end up being Trellis's love interest because a. Cheap and cliche as fuck and b. Her character has so much more potential than that but I do hope they'll become friends! (Trellis name one other person your age that is your friend. Besides, Emily.) To make a very good redemption arc, the characters shouldn't necessarily forgive the villain who'd done something bad, the latter should just learn about the wrong of his ways and actively will try to change better for the good! But no, they seem to let it go real fast. Wanna put some more examples of half-assed redemption? Luger. Gabilan. Geez. Thanks for the addition! :)

I don't know much about the musical cats outside of the basic premise and a couple of songs, would you happen to have a favorite version/recording you'd recommend for someone wanting to check it out for the first time

Okay, so the first thing you'll wanna do is watch the 1998 movie, which is just a proshot of the musical

the '98 version cuts a few things that are pretty easily found elsewhere, notably:

-the rest of Mungojerrie and Rumpleteazer

-Misto's Conjuring Turns

-Growltiger's Last Stand (which is cut from a lot of productions bc it's not very plot-relevant and also pretty racist)

but all in all, the '98 version will tell you everything you need to know about what versions you wanna watch next and what the fandom is talking about lol. i also think Munkustrap in that version is top tier lol

also, as far as the music goes, while i do usually prefer the '98 versions of most of em, i gotta admit the OLC of Misto's song and the Betty Buckley version of Memory are my absolute faves. no contest.
