Klaus is dealing with a strong, welcome feeling of being home, which he’d find funny if it wasn’t utterly thrilling to be experiencing it. “Come on.    “Dude, you don’t need to justify yourself to me.”

It feels weird charging him full price - and selling him pills - and licking said pills - when he looks like that, but it’s not Nemo’s place to patronize him either. It does kind of help when he talks like a freaky little dude. Still doesn’t make him feel like a grownup, but they can deal with selling to the Children of the Corn instead of Oliver Twist.

   “If you wanna talk about it... That’s different, knock yourself out.” (They smile.) “But don’t sweat about explaining why you need a depressant. You gotta be in a pretty weird place with doctors. I get that.”

Every now and then Johnny treats himself, or so he sees it, to a walk outside the school with Five. A little persuasion towards fresh air and good conversation does them both good. The game has long come to a close and made way for concerted chatter, and Johnny has learned in the past weeks to let Five’s jabs wash over him like water off a duck’s back, especially when it comes to the school. He’s strong in the heart, he could never have taken this kind of role in the community if he weren’t thick-skinned. But - ah, he takes a seat outside the entrance before straining himself with further thought.

   “Five,” he wheezes like a dog toy chewed out of its squeaker. Once settled he reiterates, with a flick of the wrist behind him to the school and the student body: “Five, don’t be cruel. They can’t all save the world. It’s the school’s first prom, and it’s hard enough to put together without your... barbs."

     ‘ i haven’t heard that in years. ’ a brow quirks upward, her feet just barely graze the floor beneath her stool. summer nods to the menu. ‘ -- what are you having? ’

‘ oh, i’ll be fine. ’  as though that would stop her anyway. bunny tilts her head back, chasing whatever she’s just swallowed with a shot of whiskey. if it were the first thing she’d taken all evening, maybe there’d be no cause for alarm. such is rarely the case. she’s certainly not going to start getting unpredictable now. voice half-mocking, disposition entirely mocking, stooping at the waist so that she can emphasise the fact that she’s the responsible adult in this situation. what a cruel and hilarious reality that is.   ‘ quit worrying. i’m bigger than you, ’  hardly,  ‘ i’ve got tolerance. i can handle it. ’

‘  you tell me.  ’  this shakedown probably isn’t going as five hoped, dixon unwavering in the face of his intimidation. dixon can see his real age, the way it weighs him down.    ‘   i know that in a few days you, past tense, will appear, here, and live your life alone. and maybe i will return a bodiless entity, maybe i will grow my body back, maybe none of this will be true and i will die, just like the rest of you.  i’ve run endless scenarios and the outcome refuses to change. as stubborn as you.  ’

it will be terrible, they think, somewhere deep down, to watch this all end. but there’s always the barrier between who they are and what they want.
