Polka sighed softly. She’d once again made the mistake of showing her magic once again, and had been pushed away by the very people she had tried to help. She probably should be used to this by now, but it still hurt.
It always hurt.
She brushed away a few stray tears, hoping to make it home before she actually began crying. She forced herself to keep moving, to just put one foot in front of the other and to ignore the stinging of the cuts she had received from being pushed away. She just wanted to go home…
The sound of someone approaching sends a thrill of panic through her, and she tries to speed up. However, an odd feeling of warmth stops her. It isn’t long before that warmth is followed by a pinkish glow that emanates from her chest. Her breath hitches in her throat, and she can’t seem to move.
She’d heard about this from her mother. She had told her that her heart would glow if she was ever around her soul-mate, and if that ever happened she should consider herself a very lucky girl. It wasn’t every day that people met their other halves.
But at this moment, Polka felt anything but lucky. She doubted that her soul-mate would appreciate being stuck with a girl like her. After all, she was cursed with a disease that no one knew how to cure, and which was always fatal. Even if that wasn’t the case, she must look like a terrible mess. Scrapes covered her legs and hands, and her dress was spotted with dirt from her earlier tumble.
She took a shuddering breath and hugged herself. “I’m sorry.” She mumbled, still refusing to look up at the other person.
