Tom/Gavin AU for harvydnt
After the death of a close friend, Gavin tries to distract himself from the pain by going to parties, drinking, and doing drugs. His behavior grows erratic, and even a little dangerous, and his family starts to worry. After narrowly avoiding arrest, his family gives him an ultimatum: go stay on his great uncle’s cattle farm in the country for a little while and cool off, or the next time he pulls a stunt like this, he’s cut off completely. He considers calling their bluff, but a part of him feels like some time away could actually do him some good. Going from city life to farm life isn’t a very easy transition for him. It’s too quiet, he’s cut off from everything, and there are way too many cows. He starts regretting his decision. That’s when he meets Tom, a ranch hand that works at his great uncle’s farm. The guy’s a pain in the ass with an ever present stoic expression and an alarming fondness for cowboy hats. On top of it all, he’s pretty much immune to Gavin’s charms, and refuses to take his shit. Tom is different from the people Gavin’s been spending his time with and honestly? He thinks he may sort of like it. Between all the glaring and the bickering, Tom teaches Gavin the benefits of living so far from everything; how communing with nature can help put things into perspective. Gavin also finds that he doesn’t mind the cowboy hats so much when Tom isn’t wearing anything else.
